Obituary
MADISON - JoAnn Pearl “Jo” Walker moved on to greener golf courses on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. She was born on May 31, 1928, in Milwaukee, Wis., JoAnn and her mother, Helen, moved to Madison in 1940, where Joann attended West Side Junior High. The family then lived for a short time in Norfolk, Va., where Jo attended Maury High School before returning to Madison. She graduated from West Side High School in 1945. Torn between pursuing higher education to become a nurse or a teacher, Jo selected the latter, and graduated in 1949 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a Bachelor of Science degree.
JoAnn began her teaching career with eight years at Edgewood School and then a decade at
Central High School, before serving another 25 years teaching, coaching, and mentoring at Madison Area Technical College. Jo's natural athleticism and love of sports served her well, as she coached MATC women's basketball, bowling, softball, and tennis, all of which she excelled at herself. During her 43 years as an educator, JoAnn enriched the lives of countless students and student athletes, who kept in touch with her long after they had graduated. Yet, Jo believed that she herself was most fortunate to have spent her life in a career that she loved! In her own words: the wonderful students, staff, and educational administrators who filled her working life were the icing on her cake. Even after she "retired," Jo continued her commitment to helping others through her volunteer work at Lakeview Elementary School, St. Dennis School, and the Warner Park Community Recreation Center.
When she wasn't teaching or volunteering, JoAnn loved to golf. A well-known amateur golfer for many years, she was a member of the WMGA and the WWPLGA and served as a USGA Committee Woman for Wisconsin for eight years. Jo's other recreational activities were working in her yard and gardens and spending time with her family and friends. Wherever she went-be it the Art Fair on the Square, a Betty Lou cruise on Lake Mendota, a Friday fish fry at the Avenue Bar, or a Mallards game on a hot summer afternoon, Jo inevitably encountered former students, colleagues, and longtime friends, who greeted her with great delight. If one measure of a Life Well Lived is indicated by the fond memories and the enduring love, gratitude, and respect of those one has met along the way. JoAnn lived her life well, indeed! Her innate gift for friendship was evidenced by her numerous friends, both far and near, her caring neighbors, and people who loved her like family. They will all miss her unfailing support and advice, her insights on sports, welcoming hugs, and homemade custard.
JoAnn specifically requested that her gratitude be expressed to the following dear friends for their love and support: Ginger Quamme, Mary Christian and Don Wilson, Kathy Cole, Daylene Petersen, and Lois Hart. Jo also wished to thank her doctors: Paul Nemovitz, Christine Starkey, Derek Clevidence, Michael McDonald, and Michael Shapiro.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her father, William Martin; her mother, Helen Montgomery and her stepfather, Frank Montgomery; her brother, James Montgomery; and nephew, Timothy Montgomery. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Margaret “Peg” Montgomery; and nephew, Daniel Montgomery.
