Obituary
MADISON-Hugo John Tiedt, age 92, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on May 19, 1925, in Sun Prairie, the son of Hugo and Lillian (Skalitzky) Tiedt. Hugo graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1943. He married Mary Ellen Graff on Aug. 14, 1948, in Sun Prairie. Hugo served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a police officer for the Madison Police Department, retiring in 1980, after serving the community for over 28 years. After his retirement, he graduated from MATC with an associate degree in Police Science. He also retired from the Coast Guard Reserve and was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No. 8483 and the American Legion. In addition, he also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America and was an instructor for AARP 55 Alive. Hugo is survived by the love of his life of 69 years, Mary Ellen; daughter, Denise (Byron) Lewis; sons, Dennis Tiedt and Jerry (Lori) Tiedt; three grandsons, Andy Tiedt, Adam Tiedt and Jason Lewis; two granddaughters, Nicole Hutchens and Cassie Lewis; eight great-grandchildren, Grayson, Wyatt, Dylan, Lorelei, Madilyn, Kaden, Everleigh and Kellan; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl Tiedt; sister, Alma Moodie; and daughter-in-law, Robin Tiedt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, with Father Randy Timmerman presiding. Burial will be held at Sacred Hearts Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or to the donor's choice. The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the compassion and care provided to Hugo by the Agrace staff and volunteers.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Tiedt family during their time of great loss. Only met Hugo one time about 16 years ago taking a defensive driving class thru AARP at St. Marys. He also worked with my father (George Cross) on the MPD.
