Obituary

MADISON - Edgar Allan “Ed” Temby, age 94, of Madison, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at Heritage Monona. He was born on August 19, 1931, in Mineral Point, the son of Carlton and Margaret (Dresden) Temby.


Ed graduated from Mineral Point High School and went on to attend the Wisconsin Institute of Technology - Platteville (now UW-Platteville), where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a PFC and served in Alaska, performing topographical survey work. Following his honorable discharge, Ed settled in the Madison area in 1955. He married Jean McFarland on December 8, 1956, at United Methodist Church of Darlington.


Ed began his professional career as a civil engineer with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, where he worked for six years before joining the DOT’s Bureau of Aeronautics. He dedicated an additional 28 years to the bureau and retired in 1990 after 34 years of service.


In 2016, Ed participated in a Badger Honor Flight alongside his longtime friend, Donald Fine. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bonita Springs, Fla., and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Madison, where he served faithfully as both Junior and Senior Warden, as well as a Vestry member. Ed also previously served as director of Ecumenical Housing of Madison.


Edgar is survived by his sons, Timothy Temby and Todd Temby; grandsons, Aaron Temby, Joseph Temby, Ian Temby and Nicholas Temby; granddaughters, Ericka Temby and Carly Temby; great-grandson, Kai Temby; great-granddaughters, Kinley Temby and Alice Temby; sister, Margaret "June" (Bob) Wells; sisters-in-law, Barbara Temby and Ruth (Owen) Thompson; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents, Carlton and Margaret; and brother, Carlton "Bill" Temby; brother-in-law, William McFarland; and sister-in-law, Shirley Nethery.


A memorial service will be held for Ed at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at a later date.
