Richard Smith

MADISON-Richard “Dick” Smith, age 97, of Madison, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, April 15, 2019, at home. He was born on Feb. 8, 1922, in Hillsboro, Wis., the son of James and Martha (Subera) Smith. He married Verna Smith on Nov. 21, 1944, in Wonewoc, Wis. Richard worked as a grounds supervisor for the City of Madison for many years. He was an avid gardener, always taking pride in caring for his flowers and plants. He had a true appreciation for the beauty of nature and especially enjoyed watching the birds, squirrels, turkeys and deer that frequented his backyard. Richard loved to travel, and appreciated scenic beauty. He and Verna enjoyed many winters in Arizona and special trips to Hawaii and Alaska. He always had a love for playing games, especially cards, and in his later years enjoyed putting together complex puzzles. With a great memory, he was able to recall events from the past with incredible accuracy. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Verna, his sister, Evelyn, and his parents. Richard is survived by his children, Rita, Steven (Kathy) and James (Mary). He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Kelly, Cody, Kayla, Kayce, Connor, Scott (Khanh), and Karl; two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Emma; and a special niece and nephew, Lori and Mark Mettel. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019, with Chaplain David Brynelson presiding. Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.
