Obituary
MADISON-Frederic R. "Fred" Salzwedel, age 89, of Madison, crossed over to the other side on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at home with his loving wife, Ann, at his side. He was born on Oct. 12, 1927, in Columbus. Fred was a confirmed bachelor until he met Ann Bishop. They were married on Dec. 21, 1979, in Madison. Ann was the love of his life and soul mate. Together they cherished 37 years full of love, devotion and many, many warm memories. Fred proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked as a lineman and later retired as supervisor of Electric Operations for Madison Gas and Electric Company in 1989. Fred will always be remembered for his kindness, patience, sense of humor, creativity and love of nature. Forever the optimist, he always counted his blessings and not his problems. He was much loved and will be dearly missed by his family. In keeping with Fred's wishes, there will be no funeral or services. In honor of Fred's memory, he wished you would all plant a tree or feed the birds. Donations to the Arbor Day Foundation or the Madison Audubon Society would be greatly appreciated. Ann,
So sorry to read of Fred's passing. People ask me all the time why I retired so young, it's because we are not promised any amount of time. Randy & I will be together 41 years in October and I'm so glad we've had this time together! Life is way too short even at 89! May you find a peace in moving forward as he would want you to do! Prayers my friend for strength. Jaclyn Walker (MGE) (608)212-4860

Dear Ann, I was so sad to learn of Fred's passing. He was someone I always admired. Thank you for caring for him, as his health declined. When I was just a little boy, Fred was my neighbor and he spent quality time with me. He showed me his building projects that he was planning, and some of the things he learned about the galaxy. He really sparked my interest in science, wildlife, astronomy, and good nutrition. I went to college and studied wildlife ecology, and enjoyed a long career with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at Horicon. For the last five years of my career, I was the DNR's Master Bird Bander - a position that directly grew from Fred's interest in me. He was a life-long learner, a person who always looked forward in life. I enjoyed our many phone conversations over the last several years, and we covered quite a few topics, indeed. I recently gave a cash donation to Marsh Haven Nature Center in Fred's memory, and the memorial will be listed in the next issue of the Marsh Haven Monarch. I so appreciate all of your support of Marsh Haven Nature Center over many years - a project that I started in 1984. Thank you, once again, Ann, for caring for my great, kind friend. I will never, ever forget my wonderful Fred. Lawrence Vine, 13010 W. Larkspur Road, El Mirage, AZ 85335
