Obituary
Madison – Vernon “Vern” Harold Richmond, age 95, of Madison, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. He was born on November 7, 1930, in Springvale, Wis., the son of Walter and Minnie (Zunker) Richmond.
Vern grew up on a farm. He proudly served in the U.S. Army. He married Betty (Nelson) Richmond on August 31, 1957. Vern worked as a tire recapper for Comstock Tire.
Vern loved fishing, playing card games like euchre and cribbage, doing puzzles, gambling, reading the Preston & Child book series and bowling in his younger years. He had a sweet tooth, especially when it came to chocolate. Vern enjoyed slapstick comedy and action movies and often watched them with his son, Vernon. He was a huge Packers, Badgers and Brewers fan and a proud owner of Packers’ stock. Vern was a member of New Life Church in Madison.
Family was very important to Vern. Participating in family gatherings brought him much joy. Sunday family dinners are a tradition that continue to this day. Vern was a soft spoken, quiet man with a gentle presence and a good sense of humor.
Vern is survived by his two daughters, Debra (David) Kohlwey and Valerie (Michael Raasch) Sellner; two sons, Vernon (Susan) Richmond and Dale (Kim) Richmond; six grandchildren, Christina (Curtis McDonald) Richmond, Melissa (Andy Merlin) Woch, Emily (Peter) Hoerl, Jakob (Mee Lor) Woch, Hannah (Brant) Hanson and Michael Richmond; and two great-grandchildren, Caspian and Atlas Woch.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Betty Richmond; parents, Walter and Minnie Richmond; and four brothers, Floyd (Esther) Richmond, Mervin (Catherine) Richmond, Glen (Mary) Richmond and Don (Norma) Richmond.
A funeral service will be held at New Life Church, 7564 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, with Pastor Heather Hayward presiding, followed by a luncheon at the church. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
