Obituary
MONONA / DEERFIELD - Donald Wayne Olman, age 92, of Monona, passed away on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at Agrace Hospice Care. He was born on Oct. 14, 1931, in Madison, the son of Elliott and Cora (Gronli) Olman. He married Janet (Powell) on July 2, 1955, in Steuben Wisconsin.
Donald graduated from East High School in 1954. He was extremely proud to have served in the U.S. Air Force and was proud to be a Korean Veteran. He was so excited to be able to go on the Honor Flight in April of 2019. Thank you to Terry McConnell for traveling with him as his companion and making this experience possible.
Donald worked for the UW Hospital for 33 years and retired in January of 1996. He was a member of the State Employee Union Local 171. He served as steward and as Vice President of Local 171 and was very proud of his union efforts and fighting for rights and benefits for workers.
He was a member of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and also attend church with his special friend, Carol, at Messiah Lutheran. He was a member of the Monona Community Center, the American Legion and was dedicated to the Democratic Party and democracy.
Donald was fun loving and full of life. He was an active and spry 92 year old. He loved spending time with his family and friends and gathering with them for Sunday dinners. He enjoyed taking country drives, the VFW on Cottage Grove Road, loved dancing, playing cards and doing puzzles. He was an avid sport fan and hardly ever missed watching the Badgers and Green Bay Packers games. He worked the concessions at Badger football games for 30 years.
Donald and Janet were very family centered. They were present for most of their family’s milestones. They supported everyone when they were in need; children, grandchildren, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and friends. They traveled throughout the states, which included Hawaii and Las Vegas. For a few years, they were snowbirds and traveled to their home in Apache Junction, Ariz.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Teresa Landmann and Cheryl (John) Probert; son, Ronald Olman; grandchildren, Jessica Landmann, Jeremy (Tammy) Olman, Angela (Hunter) Bonjour Weber, Mikhail (Jessie) Landmann and Cory (Sydni) Nelson; nine great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Karysma, Jadin, Malachi, Kali, Atticus, Aila, Rayliana and Eleanor; great-great-grandchild, Rosetta; sister, Marlene Gray; special friend, Carol Schuch; former in-laws, Eric Landmann, Tim Nelson, Scot Mooers and Scott Bonjour; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet (Powell) Olman; two sons, Michael Olman and Gerald Olman; his parents, Elliott and Cora; and two sisters, Barbara Olman and Judith Rubiel-Perez.
A special thanks to his niece, Jackie Walker, for her help in caring for both Don and Jan over the years. Also a special thanks to the Agrace team who were so helpful, kind and patient in his final days.
A funeral service will be held at CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS, 5602 Irongate Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
