Obituary

MADISON - Barbara J. “Barb” Norene, 96, of Madison, Wis., passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 25, 2025. Born on September 9, 1929, in Augusta, Wis., to Leon Lewis and Ellen Mierow, Barb lived a full and joyful life defined by kindness, warmth and a deep devotion to family and education.  


After graduating from Augusta High School, Barb earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She went on to dedicate her career to teaching mathematics, shaping young minds at Columbus High School, Shenk Jr. High, Marquette Jr. High, Sennett Middle School, and finally La Follette High School in Madison. While at La Follette, Barb helped develop the Math Fundamentals Program, a pioneering effort designed to give every student the tools to succeed in mathematics - a clear reflection of her belief in the potential of every learner.  


On June 9, 1962, Barb married the love of her life, Dick Norene. Together, they shared many wonderful years, cherishing time spent with friends and family at their beloved Door County condo. Barb’s cheerful disposition and friendly nature made their home a welcoming gathering place for guests. She was as generous with her hospitality as she was with her encouragement, always wanting others to thrive.  


Barb loved attending and later watching UW-Madison football and basketball games, a passion she and Dick shared for decades. She also delighted in photographing flowers and spending time with arts and crafts, often sharing her creativity with her students and dear friends.  


Barb is survived by her cousin, Mary (Brian) Blakely; and her family friend, David Varichak. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Dick. In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be held.  


Her light, optimism and gentle spirit will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

She was the best math teacher I ever had at LaFollette high school! I learned a lot in her class and learned to love math, even though I am dyslexic with numbers, she helped me through all of that.

As a freshman at LaFollette High School in 1977, I had Mr. Norene for history and Mrs. Norene for math. My parents were good friends with the Norene’s, as my dad worked with them when they taught at Schenk Middle School. They were kind and caring and I have many fond memories of them. Barb was a wonderful teacher..math fundamentals class was the BEST math class ever...I sucked at math until this class, Mrs. Norene had the patience of a saint when dealing with me not only in math class, but I had the privilege of having her as a homeroom teacher for 4 years!!! I didn't appreciate Mrs. Norene until years after graduation and am so glad I reached out to her to thank her for all she did for me. She will always have a special place in my heart.
