Obituary
WINDSOR - Jerome Merrill Nelson, age 93, of Windsor, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. He was born on April 27, 1929, in Flint, Mich., to Theodore John and Evelyn (Olson) Nelson.
Jerome served 35+ years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Colonel. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin for 25 years, serving as Administrator of the Division of Collective Bargaining and Personnel Director for the Department of Administration.
Jerome was a dedicated member of several fraternal organizations. He was a member of Sun Prairie Masonic Lodge No. 143, where he served as master. He was past Commander-in-Chief of the Scottish Rite Valley of Madison, received the Scotty Award for new memberships and received the MSA and the 33% degree in Scottish Rite. He was a member of Madison York Bodies: Robert Macoy Commandery #3, Knights Templar, Madison Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Madison Council #3, Royal and Select Masters and Tri-County Chapter #11; Winnebago Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, Wisconsin College Masonic Societas Rosicruciana in Civitatibus Foederatis, Royal Order of Scotland, National Sojourners, Royal Order of Jesters and Zor Shrine Veterans Patrol. He also served as vice-chairman of the Masonic Home’s Board of Directors in Dousman.
Jerome served as past chairman of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Board. He was a member of ROA, TROA, American Legion Post 501 and VFW Post 8483. Jerome was also a member of the State of Wisconsin Regulation and Licensing Real Estate Board and served as Trustee for the Village of DeForest. He was a member of Torsk Klubben and Sons of Norway. He was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church, serving many years as an Elder and Sunday School teacher.
Jerome is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Tom (Barbara); daughter, Ann (Terry) Hoffman; granddaughters, Kimberly (Sean) Mick and Faith (Adam) Jenson; great-grandchildren, Arlo, Pearl, Gracie and Ayda; brother, Jim (Sandy) Nelson; sisters, Joyce Lien and Jean Kreger; brother-in-law, Richard Seltzner; sisters-in-law, Emily and Elaine Boehm; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved pet, Chloe. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; sisters, Joanne Seltzner and Janice Nelson; brothers-in-law, Darrell Lien, George Kreger, Donald Boehm, Robert Boehm and Robert Walker; and sisters-in-law, Beverly Boehm and Alyce Walker.
He was a loving and charitable husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed by all.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Memorials may be made to Children’s Dyslexia Center of Madison or Shriners Hospital. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
