MADISON- David Paul Mueller, age 97, was called to his heavenly home on Jan. 13, 2017, at Heritage Monona Assisted Living. He was born on March 25, 1919, in Winona County, Minn. the son of Adolph and Katherine (Aldinger) Mueller. He married Lucille Holz on July 12, 1941, in Hart, Minn. David worked as the State Administrative Officer, Soil Conservation Service for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 36 years, retiring in 1976. David was a long-time active member of Monona Evangelical Lutheran Church serving as president, vice president and secretary. He was a charter member and volunteer at Bethesda House of Thrift. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and great grandfather who will be remembered as a soft spoken, gentle, witty, kind, generous man. David is survived by his sons, Richard (Nancy) Mueller of McFarland, Roger (Mary) Mueller of Oregon and David (Diane) Mueller of McFarland; six grandchildren, Roger Mueller II, Amy Lehmann, Dawn (Jerry) Hopp. Matthew Mueller, Melissa Mueller (Cory Gilbertson) and Jill Mueller (Bill Nelson); six great-grandchildren with the seventh due in March; three sisters, Alice Klawitter, of Winona, Minn., Natalie Hunt of Blue Earth, Minn., and Dorothy Lau of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years; his parents; five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be held at MONONA EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4411 Monona Dr., Monona, at 11 a.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, and at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monona Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethesda Lutheran Home or Agrace HospiceCare. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Dave was my late husband's uncle. What a great person. We were blessed to visit Dave and Lucille at their home in Madison several times. Dave will be remembered for his quick wit and humorous insights . He always made us smile and laugh. Our deepest condolences to his family. The earth is a little less gracious with his absence .

Peace and comfort be with you all dear cousins. Uncle Dave will be missed. His stories and dry humor bring Fond memories of stops between MN and IL with him and Auntie Lou. Know we hold those memories close in heart. A handful of cashews and Culver's burger come to mind as well as their smiles, always. Many joyful times together with each of you too. Godspeed. Mr. Mueller was the famous "neighbor to the north" from 1998 until 2014. He was a devoted neighbor and friend, helping to take care of my house and grounds before I actually moved in. He claimed he was supervising the workers to make sure I was getting my money's worth! I'll never forget one cold January night when a huge owl sailed over my house and landed in the blue spruce trees behind the Muellers, hooting softly at a full moon. I called Mr. Mueller and excitedly announced the arrival of a great horned owl, calling for him to come to the back deck and enjoy its company. After a very pregnant pause, Mr. Mueller gruffly asked "Have you been drinking?!" followed by laughter. He also claimed that both he and his wife, Lucille, went south every winter, much to my surprise because they lived here year round. After another pause, followed by a wry smile, he replied that he took his wife south to Stoughton, to have her hair done, every Friday! God bless you, Mr. Mueller, for your gifts and wonderful legacy in the Glendale neighborhood. My deepest sympathy to the entire Mueller family from Mr. Mueller's former "neighbor to the south".

My father, Alfred Mueller, was a younger brother of Dave's. When I was growing up, my father was a farmer on a farm close to the family farm where Dave , my father, and all their siblings grew up. As it would take a lot of planning, it was rare that we left the farm for a vacation. There was one exception, however. My mom could pull my dad away from the farm to go visit Dave and Lucille! My parents were always close to them... although not always in distance. My Uncle Dave and Aunt Lucille were people who lived their faith and clung to it throughout their long lives. My parents chose Aunt Lucille to be my Godmother. She never missed one of my birthdays... always sending a card, until she was no longer able to do so. I am sure that she remembered me in her prayers, also. Rest in peace in our Savior's arms, Uncle Dave and Aunt Lucille. You will be missed by many... including me. Dianne Mueller Lange
