Obituary
MADISON - Mary Marty, age 96, died peacefully at home after a short illness on January 13, 2025, lovingly surrounded by her family. Mary was born in South Dakota, the third oldest of 11 children, to Clark and Leona Nelson. The family moved to Wisconsin for her father’s job with the railroad. She graduated in 1947 from East High School and married Frederick Marty on June 26, 1948. Together they had five children, 11 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Mary is survived by her children, Katharine, Gail (Dave), Alan (Beverly), Judy (Kent) and Jeff; brothers Jim (Jan) and Tom; sister, Laurel (Hank); and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A loving mother, Mary lived life for her family. They created many wonderful memories at the family cottage on Lake Wisconsin. Mary enjoyed boating, bowling, dancing, crossword puzzles, reading mysteries, baking cookies with the grandkids, playing euchre and bunco, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, watching professional golf, and listening to classic country music, especially Patsy Cline. A charter member of Memorial United Church of Christ, she cherished and valued her church family and volunteering in the office.
Mary was known for her kind heart and gentle nature. Never a harsh word, she had a smile and cheerful greeting for everyone. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her. Her quiet words of wisdom will forever remain in our hearts.
A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2025. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
