Obituary

MONONA-Edward A. Marking, Sr., 89 years young, Monona, died Tuesday, March 26, 2019. He was born to Martin and Margaret (Koch) Marking on Jan. 31, 1930 in Black Earth and married Iline V. Pfister at St. James Catholic Church, June 30, 1956, Madison. He worked at Oscar Mayer for 33 years, retiring in 1985 and at the Alliant Energy Center for nearly 50 years and met many performers. He was one of Elvis’ bodyguards when Elvis last performed at the Dane County Coliseum which is now known as the Alliant Energy Center. After he retired from Oscar Mayers, he drove elderly and handicapped people around for several different companies such as Care Cabs, Mayflower and Cal-A-Van. Ed also volunteered as an EMT on the Monona Ambulance for 20 years. One of his most treasured accomplishments was attending George Barr Umpire School in Longwood, Fla. in 1953. He wanted to become a major league umpire, but due to a strike at the time, there was no need for umpires. He umpired Home Talent baseball for several years and he gave his kids a love for the game. Ed was involved in the building and grounds committee and volunteered in the first aid tent at the annual festival for many years at his church. He was president of the Blood Donors Club for 15 years while at Oscars through local 538. He enjoyed playing card, especially Euchre, solo and rummy 500, and he thoroughly enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports or do whatever activity they participated in; he rarely missed an event. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Margaret Marking; brother, Jerome of Daleyville, Wis.; Iline’s parents, Wm. and Elizabeth Pfister, Sr.; brothers-in-law, Werner Annen of Madison, William Kelly, Sr. of White Bear Lake, Minn., William Pfister Jr. of Las Vegas, Nev. and Lester Gammeter, Sr. of Oregon, Wis.; sisters-in-law, Ruth Pfister and Betty Rose Pfister, both of Madison. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Iline; daughters, Virginia Marking of Madison, Martha (Michael Slaughter) Marking of Boone, N.C., Yvonne (Gary Barman) Dahl of Monona, Michelle (Mark Disch) Marking of Verona, Karen (Steve) Kipp of Madison, Nancy (Larry “Bo”) Thornsen of Madison and Joanne (Larry) Silver of Verona; and son, Edward A. (Joanne) Marking, Jr., of Madison. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; Howard Dahl, Matthew Dahl, Jacob Dahl, Kaitlyn Dahl, Taylor Disch, Paige Disch, Kari Kipp, Candace Kipp, Mars Thornsen, Michael Thornsen, Natalie Marking, Logan Marking, Eli Marking, Alexander Silver, Carson Silver and McKenna Silver. He is further survived by his sisters, Jeannette Annen of Madison and Rita Kelly of White Bear Lake, Minn.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and honorary grandson, Manny Toal of Monona. Ed’s love of music and pets was well known even in his last day’s he would move his hands to the beat of a good polka or church song and he will be missed by many grand-pets too many to name here. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield Rd, Monona at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 1, 2019 with Fr. Chad Droessler officiating. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Monona, on Sunday, March 31, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with a rosary at 3:30 PM and at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the mass. Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens following the mass. To the end of his day’s if there was anything he could have done to help us, he would have. A special thanks to the staff at Karmenta Nursing Home for taking take of Ed for the last 14 months of his life. Memorials may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary, Monona or St. Francis Xavier Church, Black Earth. Gunderson East Funeral & Cremation Care 5203 Monona Drive 608-221-5420

Uncle Ed, You were always a joy to be around, with a nod of the head and yup. My best memories were watching you ump in the summer, riding backwards in the station wagon with the rear window open and watching the Packers play the Vikings. Somehow we were always over at your and Aunt Iline's house that Sunday! You were generous with hugs and kind words. Your love and dedication to the rosary has been an inspiration. Say Hi to dad and I hope you both get to go fishing soon!
