Obituary

MADISON - Evelyn Juanita (Baumgarten) Krugman, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at Bay Harbor Assisted Living in Madison, Wis. Evelyn was born in Baraboo, Wis., on Feb. 11, 1931, to parents Otto and Dorothy Baumgarten. On Nov. 8, 1947, she married Gary Wesley Krugman. They celebrated 70 years of marriage before his passing in 2018.

Evelyn was a devoted wife, strong hardworking woman and active member of the Lakeview Moravian church participating in choir, Women’s Fellowship and their dart ball league.  For 60+ years she cared for her husband who was struck down with polio at 25 years of age with four young children at home.  She and Gary loved sports and spent many a summer night watching city softball games or yelling (loudly) from the stands at her sons’ sporting events.

But the trait that is remembered the most by those who knew her was her compassion and huge heart. She faithfully visited friends, relatives and church members who were struggling with health issues, attended funerals of not only her acquaintances but those of her children and lovingly kept abreast of her family’s daily lives and milestones.

Evelyn is survived by her sons, Donald (Bonnie), James (Jeri) and John (Becky); son-in-law, Gary Brinkman; 10 grandchildren, Wendy, Pam, Mandy, Ty, Reed, Kris, Angela, Brandi, Douglas and Alison; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Faye Baumgarten; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; daughter, Cyndy; her parents and grandparents; brothers, Ted and Otto Jr., who was killed in World War II; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Edna Mae (Butch) Schneider and Emmy Lou (Farres) Harrison.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2024. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday and also from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. A graveside service will take place at HIGHLAND MEMORY GARDENS, 3054 County Highway BB, Cottage Grove, at 12 noon on Thursday.

I would try to visit Aunt Evelyn and Uncle Gary when I was back in Wisconsin. When I was first diagnosed with Leukemia, Aunt Evelyn told me she prayed for me everyday and I knew it! Her strength of faith inspired others, including myself! The only time that I felt trepidation was having Sunday dinner at Grandma B’s house and Aunt Evelyn would go around, checking all of our plates to make sure we had eaten everything!! We definitely made sure we ate everything!! 🥰🥰🥰

As an interim preacher of Evelyn’s beloved congregation, Lakeview Community Moravian Church, I developed strong ties with her and Gary. Evelyn was a dynamic force of this church family, a deeply devoted believer in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, a woman who always put her faith into action, who had no problem making her opinions known. I remember saying to Evelyn that while I didn’t always agree with her that I loved her. She indeed lived her life dedicated to her faith, family, friends, church, and community. Evelyn was an energetic encourager of my ministry and I will always be grateful to God for the gift of knowing her and calling her my friend. All my love and sympathy to her family and friends. Evelyn is now in the more immediate presence of our God. Tom Caflisch

Evelyn was my cousin-in-law and, like Gary, I knew her for 70 years. She was always there when she was needed—to bring potato salad to a picnic or attend the funeral of a lcved one. She never doubted in a life beyond this one. She laughed and loved fiercely. She will be missed by her church, her devoted ever growing family and me.

Mrs. K as she was known to me and my family, was a stalwart and important figure in our lives for as long as I can remember. She was in fact, part of our family and will be dearly missed. I’ll always remember her friendly smile and those boxes of amazing Christmas cookies we dearly looked forward to receiving. Seeing her in April of last year at our Mother’s funeral, I couldn’t believe how strong she still remained and reminded of what an amazing human being she truly was. She will be dearly missed, deepest condolences to the family and Godspeed Mrs. K! Rich Mueller

Lots of happy memories of Evelyn as she was my neighbor for many years. I always enjoyed our conversations/chats as we would cover anything from the soaps to sports and everything in between. What a cook/baker she was. She made me and other neighbors her delicious Rhubarb Pie every Spring and also would surprise me with her Tasty Soups!!! She loved cooking in large pots as she always made sure others got fed. She was also so proud of her African Violets as it seemed she always had one blooming. Anchor Drive has another Angel to watch over us!!! Extending my sympathy to the Krugman Family!
