Virginia attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, for her freshman year and then transferred to the School of Music at University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Music degree in 1946. She took advantage of the many travel opportunities available to overseas teachers and visited many areas of Asia and Europe.
