MADISON- Richard F. Hanke, age 85, passed away on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on Nov. 14, 1931, in Spring Green. Dick graduated from River Valley High School with the class of 1950. He worked at Oscar Mayer from 1950-1994 and retired after 44 years. Dick proudly served in the United States Army from 1953-1954 and was stationed in Germany. He then continued in the Army Reserves for 10 years. Dick was united in marriage to Patricia McCauley on Aug. 27, 1955. They were married for 25 years before her passing. Dick was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church. He volunteered at MSCR (Madison School Community Recreation) where he was the first mate to the pontoon operator. Dick also volunteered many hours at City View Nursing Home and Oscar Mayer's R.E.A.D.I. program. He was a lifetime member of the Spring Green American Legion Post No. 253, a lifetime member of VFW Post. No. 7591, and a member and Vice President of KAYRA Group. Dick married Shirley Fehrman on July 6, 1985. She preceded him in death in 2012. Dick enjoyed playing euchre and fishing. He was proud to say that he taught all of his grandchildren how to fish. Dick is survived by his children, Sally (Jeff) Nelson of Stoughton, Jeff Hanke of Madison/Cazanovia, Kathy (John Brown) Brown of Madison; step-children, Brian (Vicki) Fehrman, and Karen (Jeremy) Ace; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his nephew Micky Livingston. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia; wife Shirley; son, Jim in 2006; sister, Marie Livingston and nephew Pat Livingston. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 12 noon, on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Parkinson's Foundation. To our forever neighbors: We are so sorry to hear of Dick's passing-another piece of the neighborhood gone. Growing up next door to Dick was a good place to be-he taught me to fish and I got to make Jeff mad by catching more fish than him which was always fun. And I was a better fisher than a cleaner for sure. Your Dad looked out for my Dad (and Mom) and when your Dad sold us 508, he gave us the gift of a home next to our Mom which allowed her to live independently for many years and also gave our children a Grandma next door, which we deeply appreciated. To the Hanke family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know that Richard was a truly great man and I had the pleasure of getting to know him while I was working at Harmony. I enjoyed his company as a friend and getting to meet you all. Iknow that he will be missed by so many. You knew me as Lucy. Everyone that Imet from your family always showed kindness and integetyand Iso appreciate that in the legacy that is you, will be carried on. Sally, Jeff ,cowboy? Never did know your proper name lol...my heart is with you today. I quit my job there to move in with and care for my mother so never did get to say goodbye to Richard so I will do it here.
