Obituary

MCFARLAND - David “Dave” Hanewall passed away peacefully at home in McFarland, Wis., on Monday, March 21, 2022, with family by his side. David wanted to share these sentiments:

I was born in Beloit, Wis., on May 10, 1943, to Edwin and Audrey Hanewall. My brother, Peter (Sue) of Beloit, and I were raised on the farm with strong midwestern farming values that served me well throughout my life. I was blessed to know the love of family and the importance of humility and compassion.

Being a father to Matt (Wendy) of La Crosse, Wis., and Casey (Blair) of Seattle, Wash., and Papa to my grandchildren, Ellanya, Ethan and Bryce, brought me great joy. I encouraged them to be their best and to lift others up. I am so very proud of them all and loved making memories during our time together hunting the hills of Richland Center, fishing the cold waters of Canada and the lakes of Madison, skiing the mountains of Colorado, and simply finding peace in nature.

My soulmate, Holly, brought laughter, love and meaning to my life. Our time together was well lived and founded on our ability to simply be ourselves. Mutual respect, trust and support were the core of our relationship. I was lucky to have Holly by my side through our 39 years together.

My friends were a big part of my life. I will miss each of you and the times we shared.

Lastly, do I need to mention my love for all things Wisconsin sports?!

I rejoice knowing God has called me home to heaven where I am at peace, pain-free and welcomed by a lot of happy Labrador retrievers with wagging tails.

I would like to thank Lynn and her team at Agrace Age at Home and Karri and the SSM Hospice team for their care of me and my family during this time. We were blessed to have you by our sides.

At my request, there will be no formal services. A celebration of life will be held at the MAPLE TREE SUPPER CLUB, 6010 US-51, McFarland, from 12 noon until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. God speed! Love, Dave

I don’t know where to start or how to end with the wonderful memories I have of David. So many to count in the life of this lucky sister-in-law! The most crazy and fun times were probably those months Holly and David “took me in” (like they did so many) and let me live in what we came to call “La Cave”…the downstairs of their lakeside home…a perfect little apartment for a soul with a heavy heart and in need not just of shelter, but love. We talked, we played, we laughed, we cried, we partied…just us three…and often with the Toby crowd, the Stump crowd and the Tower Road crowd…and yes, even through the winter months at 6 am in the driveway, surrounded by the best and most loyal of dogs, unrecognizable in woolen winter face masks, waving at all those who drove by, we made memories…through all the years, and all the fun, David always made me feel loved…and at home…he will be missed beyond belief…but he is also now finally at rest and “at home”…

The picture of Dave is how I will remember him. Kind, calm, compassionate and always looking for a reason to laugh. I owe my career to Dave. Likely out of obligation to Holly, he got me my start in business with IBM - a philosophy, pre-med student who had no business getting a chance - but he made it happen and I am beyond grateful. My heart breaks for Holly, Matt, Casey and their families, but knowing he has left footprints, will always be here and is held in the arms of God is all we can hope for. Thank you Dave - and welcome Home.

I will always remember the kindness Holly and Dave showed me. They also took me in for a short time. I was very nervous, as I had never met Dave but he showed me such kindness and even joked with me. He will be missed but am glad he is no longer in pain.

I will remember Dave as one of the most kind, humble and intelligent people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Dave was the go-to guy whenever we had a significant technical problem at work. Everyone was relieved when they learned Dave was on the team. He worked quietly with intelligence, humility and a smile. He touched many of our lives as a professional role model. My deepest condolences to Holly and your family.
