MADISON - Lois P. Fritz, age 96, completed her life’s journey on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024. She was born at St. Mary’s Hospital on May 27, 1927, to Louis and Rachael (Garvoille) Pease.

Oregon, Wis. was her home until 1942. It was the time of World War II when the family moved to Madison so that her father could walk to work. Lois Graduated from Central High School in 1945. She met her husband, Mark, at the Young Adult Club and they married June 11, 1949. They raised five children together on the shores of Lake Waubesa, where they enjoyed fishing, swimming, boating, and entertaining. They were avid supporters of the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, and Lois was always busy preparing food for the troops and fundraising events.

Lois went back to work after Mark’s death to support the family, working for Dane County, eventually serving as staff to several judges in the Dane County Court System.

After retirement, Lois split her summers and winters between her Midwest and West Coast families - Favorite summer pastimes were card games at the Monona Community Center and Frostwoods and bonfires and fireworks at Lake George in Rhinelander. Lois was an avid supporter of her grandchildren and enjoyed precious moments with them playing games, catching turtles, frogs, and crawfish, and cheering them on at sporting and music events. Her favorite pastime though, was taking leisurely pontoon boat rides in Madison and Rhinelander.

She never met a stranger she didn’t like. During the winter months, Lois made many new west coast friends at quilting workshops, and of course the spirited Canasta games at the Senior Center. She enjoyed taking long walks along the beach with the “Striders” and performing in holiday bell choir concerts. A proud survivor of cancer, Lois was an active member and supporter of her son-in-law’s “ZF Dancing Fleas” Relay for Life team and helped raise over $300,000 for the American Cancer Society over a period of five years.

Lois moved to the Frostwoods Senior Apartments, where she continued to enjoy new friendships, play cards, dominoes and share good reads. Always sharp as a tack, Lois was driving (both front and back seat) up until the end, earning the nickname of “Lead foot Lois” as she would peel out of Lori’s driveway after a visit.

During the last months of her life, Lori’s pups, Dooley and Chaka, were ever at her side - her guardians and companions.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; baby brother, Raymond Louis Pease; sister, Mary Jean Webster; husband, Mark Earl Fritz; and son, Raymond Louis Fritz.

She is survived by her children, Stuart (Mary) Fritz, Jean Fritz-Knoll, Mary Clark and Loretta (David) Slauson; grandchildren, Nicole FritzWilliams, Matt Clark, Caroline Hower, and Mark and Derek Slauson; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024. Burial will follow at 1:15 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agrace HospiceCare (www.agrace.org ).
