Chon Haeng Foster

MADISON - Chon “Jeannie” Foster died on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, after a ten-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Chi, Chon Haeng was born on Sept. 17, 1936, in Chonlapuk-do, South Korea, the only child of Yong Ki and Yu, Pok Ye. Jeannie's father died of TB before Jeannie was born and her mother died of TB when Jeannie was two months old. She was raised by her grandma.  Jeanie grew up during the Korean War, which was a difficult and scary time. She was close to her many aunts and uncles and considered her cousins her siblings.

In 1966, during the Vietnam War, Jeannie was working at the Army base in Seoul, South Korea, where she met Mark Foster. Mark, an MP at the American Embassy, and Jeannie were married on Jan. 23, 1969, first at the Embassy, and again at a traditional wedding with Jeannie's family. That spring, they moved to Madison where Mark had grown up. Jeannie worked as a housekeeper at Madison General Hospital until 1978, when they moved to Havana, Ill. She worked in a hospital in Havana until 1993 when they returned to Madison and built a home. There, Jeannie worked as a housekeeper at Webcrafters' Book Bindery until she retired in 2006.

Throughout their marriage, Mark and Jeannie thoroughly enjoyed and spoiled their four Maltese dogs. Jeannie loved to crochet, garden, fish, and can and pickle vegetables grown in her garden. Mark and Jeannie loved traveling around the country in their travel trailer.

Jeannie is survived by Mark's sisters, Gail (Tom) Aaroen, and Joan Foster; Mark's stepsister, Jennifer Stull; four nephews and one niece, Josh, Jake and Joe Aaroen, and Christopher Stull, and Ashley Stull. Jeannie adored Josh Aaroen's three daughters, Bryonna, Kendra and Hannah. Jeannie is further survived by many Korean friends, with whom she enjoyed cooking amazing Korean foods, and playing cards. Jeannie was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and Irene Foster; her father-in-law's second wife, Phyllis; and brother-in-law, Tom Aaroen, who died less than three months before Jeannie.

Jeannie spent the last 30 months of her life living at Azura Memory Care in Stoughton, Wis. Her family would like to thank the staff of Azura, where she received an abundance of tender, loving care, and also the staff of Agrace HospiceCare.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday. A private burial will be held at a later date at Mount Repose in Friendship, Wis.
