Obituary

MADISON - Janice Marie Foss, age 97, passed away on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, in Florida. Janice was born on Feb. 17, 1925, in Sauk City, Wis., to her parents, Harold and Emma (Grass) Spraetz at her Grannie’s home.

Janice graduated from Madison East High School in 1943. She married Harold Foss on Aug. 1, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She did not want her passing to be a glorification of her life. What she has done during her time on earth, was out of deep gratitude and love for God, her wonderful supportive family, friends, and neighbors. Janice was thankful for the gift of the time spent with loved ones which brought great richness and joy to her life.

Janice is survived by her deeply loved children, Allen (Sandy) Foss and Janeen (John) Eberle; beloved granddaughter, Ashley (Leif) Bergquist; great-grandchildren, Eden and Calvin; nieces, Roz Spraetz, and Joni (Paul) Holmes, nephews, Don and Daryl (Stephanie) Spraetz, great-nieces and nephews, Liz (Brian) Seubert, Collin, Dylan, Kate (Eric) Hartkopf, Cece and Josie, Stephan (Tracy) and William. She is preceded in death by her parents; dear husband, Harold; and brother, William (sister-in-law, Donna) Spraetz.

A private family service and burial have been held to honor Janice’s final wishes. In her own words, “my dearest love will be with you always until we meet again.”

Jan was a ray of sunshine in the lives of every person who was blessed to know her. Jan was my neighbor for many years in the '60s and 70's when I was growing up. We reconnected years later and became great friends. I always received and deeply appreciated Jan's love and kindness and will be forever grateful for the gift of her friendship. Our laughter and bond will be my treasured memory. Rest peacefully in heaven dear Jan. Aloha a hui hoa (until we meet again).

The Schalow family has wonderful memories of the Foss family, and especially of Jan at this time. My mom remembers well working with Jan at the bank. She treasures the memory of how Jan, Harold, our late dad, and she lovingly welcomed and assisted a Vietnamese refugee family sponsored by our church in the 1970s. When my mom told me of Jan’s passing, she said, “Well done, Jan. You earned many jewels in your heavenly crown.” My two remaining brothers and I have warm, loving memories of Jan. One of my favorite keepsakes from my childhood is the book I received from the Foss family on my third birthday. (Look at that unmistakable penmanship!) I continue to treasure it as a tangible reminder of a woman, and a family, who has meant so much to ours. We send our love. Jeanette, Tom, Larry and Greg Schalow

Al and Janeen, Although it has been over 45 years since I last saw your mom, I remember her as always having a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. May God’s peace be with you and you families. Larry Schalow

Jan blessed so many with her kindness, thoughtfulness and laughter, not to mention her lovely penmanship and beautiful smile. Jan & my mom grew up as neighbors on Helena Street and our families got together often. Lots of fond memories of my sister & I putting on parades with Al and Janeen while our parents played cards. The year my friends threw a surprise party for me I was disappointed that we were not, in fact, going to the Fosses that night as I had been led to believe. :) What a blessing to have Jan in our lives. Rest in heavenly peace sweet angel. Our thoughts are with you & your families, Al and Janeen. love, Debbie

Jan was such a dear sweet lady. We are neighbors now with Al and Sandy, but were also neighbors of Jan and Harold when they lived on our street. Bob and I also remember Harold - and how he would ride his bike around the neighborhood visiting along the way. What a sweet couple they were. Our sympathies to Al and Sandy and to the family. I knew Jan Foss through my mother, Kathleen McGuine Geib, who was an East High classmate and friend. Jan and I share a February 17th birthday. For many years she never failed to send me a “mutual birthday” card, always with a warm greeting and that beautiful penmanship. I think we only met once, but I’ll always remember her smile and blue eyes. The fact that we really didn’t know each other makes her faithful correspondence all the more remarkable! In Jan’s honor, I continue to send February 17th birthday cards to everybody I know in our “birthday club.”
