Valerie “Val” Flanigan

MONONA - Valerie “Val” Flanigan, age 86, passed away on October 14, 2026, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis. She was born on September 1, 1940, in Rockford, Ill., to Pierre and Aileen Vinet. Valerie was married to Richard “Dick” Flanigan on May 25, 1968, in Monona. She is survived by her two sons, Paul (Amy) Flanigan and their children, Haley and Trevor; and Daniel (Sarah) Flanigan and their daughter, McKenna.

Val lived in Pennsylvania and Minnesota before moving to Rockford where she met Dick. He took a job as the art director for WMTV Channel 15 in Madison. They moved to Madison and married shortly thereafter. Val worked at various banks in the area before landing her dream job of executive assistant to Ron Thorstad at Thorstand Chevrolet for 17 years.

After the boys left the nest, Val and Dick traveled extensively, seeing multiple European countries. After Dick passed, she continued to travel all over the world with close friends.

Val joined the Monona Senior Center and became a volunteer working the info desk. She not only rekindled old friendships, but gained many new friends through multiple card games and crafting groups.

Val’s wishes were to not have a service. Instead, she asked that everyone have a cocktail.

Paul and Dan wish to thank the incredible staff at St. Mary’s for their support, kindness, and compassion while taking care of Valerie.
