SUN PRAIRIE - Joan Emily (nee Degen) Eggert was born on November 29, 1944, in Floral Park, N.Y., to Norman Arthur Walter Degen and Rose Ida Augusta (nee Havemann) Degen. Joan was baptized on January 21, 1945, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Garden City, N.Y.. At the age of 8, she moved with her parents to Park Ridge, Ill., and was confirmed at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church on March 30, 1958. She graduated from Maine Township East High School in 1962. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a bachelor's degree in medical technology in June 1966. In September 1966 she married Arthur Arnold Eggert at Wisconsin Lutheran Chapel in Madison, Wis. They were blessed with three children - Erik Karl Eggert (Kellie) of Houston, Texas, Rebekka Margarete Kieta (Geoffrey) of Menomonie, Wis., and Emily Louise Mandler (Michael) of Egg Harbor, Wis. Joan died on May 21, 2025, at her home in Sun Prairie, Wis. She is survived by her husband; her brother, Bruce Degen; her three children and their spouses; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Naomi Barrow; and her granddaughter, Hannah Kieta.
For most of her married life, Joan lived in Madison, Wis., but she and her husband moved to Sun Prairie in 2015. While she occasionally worked in her profession outside the home, her primary career was serving her Lord as a wife and mother. She was active in numerous Lutheran organizations over the years, and she most enjoyed church music, which she wrote, played, and sang. She sang in various choirs and directed several of them. Most recently, she played in the Sun Prairie Area Community Band and the WELS Wind Ensemble. She also sewed clothes for herself and her family members, did oil and watercolor paintings, sketched, did rosemaling, cross-stitched, quilted, and knitted. She enjoyed Madrigal, Renaissance, and German festivals.
A funeral service will be held at LORD OF LOVE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 105 Paradise Circle, DeForest, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2025, with Pastor Joel Jenswold presiding. Burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. She will be interred at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona.
