Obituary
MADISON-Betty J DeVoe, age 91, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Sylvan Crossing. She was born on Jan. 21, 1926, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Martin and Aranka (Micheal) Unterfranz. Betty attended St Bernard Catholic Grade School and graduated from Madison East High School. On June 18, 1947, she married George Richard DeVoe, the love of her life! Together they raised four daughters, Kathleen, Nancy, Mary Beth, and Susan. Betty was a wonderful homemaker. She always kept an immaculate house and had dinner on the table at 5:30 no matter what. After the children had grown, Betty went on to work for the Monona School Systems as a secretary for the Winnequah School. Betty was an active parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. She served on the altar society, St. Anne's and sang in the church choir for many years. Betty enjoyed bowling and belonged to several different ladies teams and couples leagues. She loved to sew and knit, and made all the grandchildren their treasured Christmas stockings. Betty also loved to play cards and was a member of several different card clubs, although she never liked sitting behind dad! What gave mom great pleasure was shopping...after all a woman could never have too many tops, enough jewelry or purses! We were all blessed to go on quite a few of these sprees, always coming home tired but remembering all the laughter we shared, especially the "Easter Bunny" episode in Milwaukee! Mom was a fabulous cook, just like her mother before her. Betty and George loved hosting "the kids" over the holidays. We will all treasure those fun-filled gatherings, delicious food, and most of all, making lasting memories! Betty is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (Steve) Spilde and Mary Beth (Scott) Heller; sons-in-law, Richard Duwe and William Otis; ten grandchildren, Andrea (Mike), Dan (Mia), Kelly (Todd), Katie (Jon), Kimberly, Timm (Caren), Stacy (Eric), Kaylee (Josh), Rachelle (Brad) and Randy (Kate); and thirteen great-grandchildren, Trevor, William, Keegan, Trenton, Landon, Thomas, Kaden, Koleton, Nora, Hailey, Emily, Liam, and Finn. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents; sister; and brother. Also preceding her in death were her daughters, Kathleen Duwe and Susan Otis, and her granddaughter, Nikki Heller. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St, Monona, at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017, with Father Gabi Lopez-Betanzos presiding. Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Vincent De Paul or St. Jude's. At this time we would especially like to give our heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers at Sylvan Crossings for the unbelievable care given to our mother. You are all truly angels on earth! Oh heavens! I don't even know any of Betty & George's kids! My heart goes out to you on the loss of your parents. I remember them from George's baseball-playing days. Betty was always so kind and gracious. May you find solace in your faith. Delores Klubertanz Haak

Betty and George were the best neighbors we ever had in Madison. We lived across from each other for almost 18 years and shared some good parties, lots of laughs, her banana bread recipe, and yes, looking at the items bought on one of her shopping sprees !! She and George were always kind to our kids and our animals who loved to sit with them while they rocked on their front porch. Betty and I came up with the idea to hide our Christmas presents at their home and the boys never knew where they were--she and George were sworn to secrecy ! We've been gone from Madison for a long time now, but one never forgets special people who touched our lives and shared time with our three sons. God Bless Betty and George---smiling and holding each other in Heaven now and forever.

Nancy and Mary Beth, I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. She was always so kind to all of us kids in the neighborhood. I remember all of those years playing with everyone with such fondness. My condolences also for Kathy and Susie. I had heard that Kathy had passed away but did not hear about about Susie. Makes me so sad that childhood friends and now your mother are no longer with us. My deepest sympathy for you and your family.

So Sorry for your lost Nancy and Mary Beth. I would have come if I had known of her passing. Your Mom was always nice to me. I enjoyed coming over to your home when we were young.

One Christmas when we were very young, and you lived near Grandma DeVoe, my father drove to your home. Your Mom has the most wonderful tree. It was so pretty, and had these bubbling lights. I still see that tree in my mind.
