MADISON - Joseph John Cullen, age 85, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Oak Park Place. He was born on March 25, 1939, in Platteville, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Williams) Cullen.


Joseph graduated from Platteville High School in 1957 and received his master’s degree in education administration from UW-Madison. He was united in marriage to Karla Flink on November 28, 1970, in Clintonville, WI.


Joseph worked as a school principal for the Madison Metro School District for 36 years.


Joseph is survived by wife, Karla; daughters, Keri Lynn Cullen, Kimberly Ann (Andrew) Puccioni; grandson, Dominic Joseph Puccioni; and granddaughter, Mia Rose Puccioni. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Catherine; and his buddy, Spike, who was 8 pounds of dynamite and was always up for sharing a treat and always sitting at Joe’s feet.

Mr. Cullen was my Principal for many years. He was a wonderful person. He would see my parents around town many many years after I was his student, he would always share a greeting and a chat. My parents would come home from those meetings and joke..."100 years later and you're elementary Principal still knows me by name you must have really giving him fits" They were joking of course. It touched them how invested Mr. Cullen was in his students and their families. May his beautiful soul rest in peace and deepest sympathies to all who loved him most. Karla and family. I am so sorry for your loss. Joe was a great principal to work with at the then Glendale Elementary School. May your many memories carry you through this difficult time. Many prayers to each of you.

I remember Mr. Cullen as a 5th grade teacher at Emerson Elementary in about 1960 - one of my best friends was in his class. At that same time I had another 5th grade teacher, Ralph Gumpf, and our two classes often did activities together. Mr. Cullen was a wonderful teacher who was respected and well liked by students.

I am sorry to hear about Joe's loss. He was my 5th-grade teacher at Glendale Elementary School and one of the best teachers I have ever had. He got me into science and bird-watching at a very young age. Joe would get a small group of young people together, and we would go out to the arboretum behind the school early in the morning to bird-watch. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
