Veryl Crompton

MADISON - Veryl Irene (Cozart) Crompton, age 90, of Madison died on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at her home surrounded by the people she loved. Veryl had a difficult journey with Alzheimer's disease for many years. Veryl was born Nov. 16, 1929, in North Freedom, Wis. to Lowell and Fern (Burwell) Cozart and was also raised by step-father, Randall Johnson. She was the second of five siblings, growing up in Adams County, Wis. Veryl graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1947. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the University of Wisconsin. Veryl worked at State Laboratory of Hygiene, Madison General Hospital and Madison Internal Medical Associates Clinic, where she met Roland M. Crompton. They were married on Dec. 23, 1950, at Lutheran Student House Chapel on the UW campus. Veryl raised three boys while working at Madison General Hospital as a medical technologist. She also worked at the State Pathology Lab, for a group of doctors in the Tenney Building, ran the Red Cross Blood Bank Lab and was a lifelong member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. After retiring, Veryl continued to live in and support the community of Madison. Veryl greatly enjoyed volunteering at Trinity Lutheran Church in the altar guild and formerly at Lutheran Memorial Church for 40 years, in Boy Scouts with her sons, mentoring in local schools, being a DAR member and doing other volunteer work. Veryl was a Master Gardener and a member of The Olbrich Botanical Gardens with a profound knowledge of plants that she passed onto her children and grandson, Elliott. Veryl had a garden of her own that impressed all her family. Along with David Adams, she enjoyed researching the family genealogy. She was thrilled when her great-grandson, Jaxson, was born. Veryl is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, James (Caroline) Crompton of Wilmington, Del., Jeffrey (Debra) Crompton of Madison, and Randall (Nancy) Crompton of Two Harbors, Minn.; granddaughters, Nyssa, Rebecca and Amanda (Bradley Wille); great-grandson, Jaxson Crompton; grandsons, Lloyd and Elliott; and special family members, David Adams (Teresa Brewer). Veryl was preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Fern Cozart; step-father Randall Johnson; her husband, Roland M. Crompton; her siblings; along with many other family members and friends. The family would like to thank the Agrace HospiceCare team for their kindness and compassion, especially Rebecca and Victoria. Veryl's wishes were to remain living in her home until she passed. Her wishes and care were made possible by David Adams, Debbie, Jeff and Amanda Crompton, Jayne Nieman and Teresa Brewer. A funeral service will be held at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1904 Winnebago St., Madison at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2020 with Rev. Andy Twiton presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Veryl's name may be made to Agrace HospiceCare, the Alzheimer’s Association, Dane County Humane Society, or Trinity Lutheran Church.
