Obituary

MADISON - Shirley A. (nee Brusveen) Neis Brom passed away on Friday, Aug. 13, 2021, at Chamomile Assisted Living in Madison, surrounded by her children. Mom was born in Mineral Point, Wis., on Aug. 9, 1933, to Benhardt and Rachel (Kristiansen) Brusveen. She spent her childhood in the Daleyville, Mount Horeb and Black Earth areas of Wisconsin. She was confirmed at Perry Lutheran Church in Daleyville, Wis. She married her first husband, Joseph Neis Jr., on Jan. 12, 1957, in Monona, Wis. They had two daughters, JoAnn and Barbara. She married her second husband, Albert "Jimmy" Brom, on April 9, 1965, in Madison. They had a son, Michael. They were together 43 years before dad passed on Dec. 24, 2008. Mom and dad enjoyed listening and dancing to many Madison area bands from the ‘60s through the ‘90s. As their children, we admired how light they were on their feet and just seemed to float on the dance floor. They also went to many concerts over the years. Some of their favorites were Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Travis Tritt and Marty Stuart. Mom even became a member of Marty's Fan Club. They also enjoyed going to thrift stores, garage sales, antique stores and flea markets, collecting antique glassware, belt buckles and musical instruments. She was an avid Badgers and Packers football fan. Mom has been doing scrapbooking before it became a popular hobby. Hers weren’t as elaborate as some today but were very informative and interesting. She had extensive scrapbooks of newspaper clippings of engagements and weddings of people she knew that were regularly published in newspapers. She was extremely proud of the scrapbooks she put together of our family heritage, which will now be carried on by the next generations. Over the years, mom worked in the dietary department at the "Old" UW Hospital when it was on University Avenue for 15 years. She then became a full-time wife and mother. One thing we can say was that mom was "a good cooker and baker!" She also worked seasonally at Wisconsin Cheeseman, Oconomowoc Canning Company in Sun Prairie, as a housekeeper and provided childcare. Mom was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed going to Stoughton to celebrate Syttende Mai and collected several pieces of rosemaling. Mom is survived by her children, JoAnn (Gary) Fuchs, Barbara (Gerald) Bodenstein and Michael (Carolyn) Brom; grandchildren, Shauna (Shane) Haddix, Brittany (Omar) Chavarria, Rachel Brom (Nick Helser) and Terese (Mitchell) Staten; great-granddaughter, Savannah Haddix; sister-in-law, Betty Brusveen of Michigan; and nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy; parents; siblings, Bernice (Michael Crouch) (Carl Layden), Helen (Myrle) Kiley, Halvor (Marie) Brusveen, Raymond (Wilaminia) Brusveen, Mae (Clayton) Peterson, Clinton Brusveen and Marvin (Ann) Brusveen; son-in-law, Richard Grubb; and several nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to give our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Chamomile Assisted Living for the loving care they gave mom during her time there. We would also like to give our heartfelt thanks to Heartland Hospice for their loving care they gave mom during these last months. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021. A graveside committal service will follow at SUNSET MEMORY GARDENS, 7302 Mineral Point Road, Madison. A luncheon will follow at the AMERICAN LEGION POST NO. 534, 4911 Burma Road, McFarland. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Memorials may be gifted in Shirley’s name to Heartland Hospice, 2801 Crossroads Drive, Suite 2000, Madison, WI 53718. Mom, rest in peace and enjoy being free of pain. We love you! My sympathy to the family of Shirley Brom at this time. Shirley was a bright and cheerful lady. She always seemed to know who I was, even though it may have been years since she last saw me. I know how it feels to lose a parent, my dad in 2012. As time goes by it gets a bit easier each time but remember the good times. They come in handy when you really need it the most.
