Obituary
COLUMBUS / MADISON - Nicholas J. Bonura, age 88, of Columbus, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2022. He was born on April 3, 1933, in Madison, the son of Mario and Mary (Valenza) Bonura and was raised in the “Greenbush”and was a paperboy.
Nicholas graduated from Madison Central High School in 1952. He joined the U.S. Army and served from 1953-1955 in both Japan and Korea. Nicholas worked as a truck driver for General Beverage and General Liquor and later for Certco, Inc. He was a proud member of the VFW Post No. 7591 and a member of Teamster Local 695.
As a young man, Nicholas was a golf caddy at Nakoma and over the years he enjoyed golfing and fishing. He played softball on the Madison City League for 37 years. He especially enjoyed the time spent with his children and grandchildren.
Nicholas is survived by the love of his life, Lois Helberg; children, Vicky (Jim) Sugden of Briggsville, Wis., Richard (Jeanne) Downing of Loves Park, Ill., and Kim (Dan) Hamilton of Sussex, Wis.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geraldine Asp of Sun City, Ariz., and Rosalie Haring (Fred) of Williamston, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mario and Mary who immigrated to Madison from Sicily, Italy; and his brother-in-law, Duane Asp of Arizona.
A private family service and burial was held at Sun Prairie Memory Gardens.
