MADISON - Nicolás Bañuelos, age 74, of Madison, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday, June 22, 2025. He was born on October 15, 1950, in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico, the son of Jesús Bañuelos and Ignacia Zamora.
Nicolás took great pride in his heritage. He came from a large and loving family who taught him the importance of having a strong work ethic. He fondly remembered his childhood in Mexico-playing “canicas,” skipping rocks, and embracing the simple joys of life. As he grew older, he passed on these stories and traditions to his grandchildren, sharing his love of culture and heritage.
After his early years in Mexico, Nicolás began a new chapter in Madison, Wisconsin, where he arrived in the 1970s and met the love of his life, María. They shared 55 wonderful years together and built a life centered around their five beautiful children.
Nicolás worked for over two decades at Oscar Mayer and later worked at Hertz Car Rental. He was a jack of all trades, and in retirement, he was always fixing something or tending to his garden. He cherished hot summer days with a cold drink in hand, grilling the perfect steak, and spending his evenings on his porch or in his garden.
He was especially proud of his peach tree, generously sharing its fruit with neighbors and friends. A true lover of mariachi music, Nicolás lit up with joy whenever it played. His passion even brought live mariachi bands to his own backyard, creating unforgettable memories for those lucky enough to attend.
Nicolás and María spent many winters together in La Joya, Texas, enjoying the warmth and making lasting memories. Above all, Nicolás loved his family. He treasured every moment spent with his children and grandchildren. Known for his quick wit, warm heart, and radiant smile, he brought laughter and love wherever he went. He was always just a phone call away and was there for anyone in need.
Nicolás will be deeply missed by his wife, María; his children, María (Scott) Willert, Irma Bañuelos, Nicolás (Heather) Bañuelos Jr., Rosemary (Orlando) Bañuelos and Víctor Bañuelos. He is also survived by his beloved siblings, Juana (Pedro) Cabral, Dolores Camacho, Felipe (Herlinda) Bañuelos, Manuel (Celia) Bañuelos and Mercedes Salinas. He leaves behind seven grandchildren, Alejandro, Marcos, Giovanni and Nyla, Valentina, Leticia and Graciela; and three great-grandchildren, Athena, Barrett and Beckham. Nicolás was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, José Bañuelos, María Jesús Rebeles Bañuelos and Paula Huizar.
Nicolás was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a beloved brother and uncle, and a loyal friend. He will be missed deeply and remembered forever.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Visitation will take place at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
