SUN PRAIRIE - Lavern John Bahler, age 79, of Sun Prairie, passed away at Highland Crossings Memory Care, on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023, at 1:20 a.m. Vern was born on March 27, 1944, in Madison, Wis., the son of John and Emma (Lund) Bahler.
Vern graduated from East High School in Madison in 1963. He married Mary (Schunk) Bahler on Oct. 25, 1991, in Monona, Wis. Vern worked for the University of Wisconsin for 40 years, retiring on July 4, 2006.
Vern loved to fish, hunt and bowl. He was a member of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He loved to teach baseball, football, bowling, soccer and basketball to children. He liked to watch the Packers and Badgers. Vern and Mary enjoyed going to Country Corners and dancing to country music.
Vern is survived by his wife, Mary J. Bahler; sons, Gordon E. (Dawn) Bahler and Timothy L. Bahler; daughters, Kristeene (James) Saaf and Heidi Bahler; stepchildren, Michelle (Todd) Ferguson and David M. (Kristie) Roth; and 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma; daughter, Angie Kaltenberg; and sister, LaVonne Bahler.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A graveside service will take place at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK, 410 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023.
