Joan Hinman Bailey

MONONA - Joan Hinman Bailey, age 82, of Monona, was taken to Heaven holding God’s hand on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021, to be reunited with her family and friends who have gone before her. She was born on June 3, 1939, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Joseph Meier and Lois (Hinman) Meier. Joan graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1957. She went on to work for the State of Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin in the Geology and Geophysics Department for 31 ½ years. The most amazing thing she recalled was getting to see the ocean from the Gulf for the first time while visiting Panama City Beach in Florida. Joan’s favorite hobby was patchwork quilting. Her goal was to make a quilt for everyone in her family, but she ran out of time. Joan was married three times, first to Clarence Hoffmann, who is the father of all five of her children, Ed, Mark, Al, Phil and Lisa; second to Bert Bailey; and third to Ralph Slatter. Joan is survived by her children, Ed (Tera) Hoffmann, Mark (Kay) Hoffmann, Al (Sue) Hoffmann, Phil (Carol) Hoffmann and Lisa (Steve) Hoffmann; brothers, Jerry Meier of Madison and Kim Meier of Wasilla, Alaska; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death her husbands, Clarence, Bert and Ralph; parents; sisters, Carol Sutter, Bonnie Doyle, Sue Ortiz and Barbara Melvin; and brothers, Joseph Andrew Meier Jr. and Larry Meier. Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the start of the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be made in Joan’s name to Zion Lutheran Church.
