MIDDLETON - Joseph J. Maly, age 90, of Middleton, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on May 8, 1931, the son of Godfred and Rosalia Maly. Joseph married Alice (Hoffman) Maly on June 2, 1952, in Verona, and was later drafted to serve in the U.S. Army in 1954.

Joe appreciated the artistry of landscapes, and farming is what made him happy. He had a talent for making things grow and his goal was to leave the land better than he found it - more verdant, rich, and fertile.

Joe was one of the smartest men we knew. He could fix anything - be it a furnace, car, or piece of farm equipment. He was a veritable encyclopedia of John Deere equipment. He was always willing to help if someone had a mechanical problem that needed solving and was incredibly generous with his time and expertise.

Joe knew practically everyone in Dane county, or at least it seemed that way. We marveled at his ability to recall names, events, and details about people with whom he crossed paths. He especially loved family gatherings, treasuring those times and dubbing them “Malyfest.”

Joe is survived by his children, Edwin (Lorraine) Maly, Ellen (Mark Sheeran) Maly, and Gerald (Margaret) Maly; sister, Rosanna Schulenberg; grandchildren, Erik (Andrea) Jones, Janelle (Christopher) Ruhland, Ehren (Sara) Maly, Robin (Jeremy) Graves, Tina (Patrick) Revell and Sara Maly; and great-grandchildren, Chloe and Fiona Graves, Lucia and James Revell, and Lincoln Maly.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Alice; parents; sister, Jeanette Hruby; and brother Raymond Maly. He was also preceded in death by his special friend of later life, Janice Selvig.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave., Middleton, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, with Father Brian Wilk presiding. Burial will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
