Hilda M. Lange

MIDDLETON-Hilda Marie Lange (nee Hinze), age 90, passed away on Monday, Dec. 19, 2016 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison. She was born on Nov. 4, 1926 in Middleton, the daughter of Henry F. and Tillie G. (Thorson) Hinze. Hilda was baptized and confirmed in St. Luke's Lutheran Church of Middleton. Her family moved to Madison in 1942 and she graduated from Central High School on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) as Salutatorian of her class. Hilda graduated UW-Madison in 1948 with a major in Medical Technology. She worked as a Medical Technologist for the next 43 years before retirement. She married Earl F. Lange of Columbus, in 1953. Earl died in 1956 from complications for a chest injury that was incurred while serving in the South Pacific for 18 months in World War II. Hilda was commissioned as a Medical Missionary to Madagascar in 1957 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Madison. She served in Lutheran Hospitals in Manambaro and Ejeda, Madagascar for 14 years, establishing their laboratories, training Malagasy students in lab procedures and translating a procedural manual into the Malagasy language. After returning to the U.S., she worked in various hospitals in Augusta, Georgia and Monroe, Wis. When Hilda retired, she did volunteer work with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Dane County. She is survived her brother, Harry Hinze; many nieces and nephews; and, "honorary" grandchildren, Amy, Audrey and Sam Vuong. She was preceded in death by sisters, Clara (Vincent) Prehn, Henrietta (Walter) Kurtz and Esther (Hiram) Hallock; sister-in-law, Janis Hinze. Services will be held on Wed., Jan. 11, 2017 at MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Blvd., Madison, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held at Middleton Junction at 1:30 pm.
