I have much to be grateful for to have known John. In the 1980s, he served on my PhD committee, always offering constructive advise. Even more were personal chats I had with John which gave me perspective on not just career but life paths, which help carry me to this day. His view was hopeful, to have faith in your own abilities, that good things come from the curiosity to learn, and never to fear failure while trying. My eternal thanks to John for these seeds he planted in a youngster. My prayers and wishes for peace to John’s family. Marty Hoerling (Boulder, CO)

I was a big fan of John's and I am greatly saddened by his passing. I looked forward every summer at NCAR to his visit to my office when we would catch up on all sorts of things. I am now retired and living in New Zealand with my daughter and grandkids nearby, and I appreciated the fact that he was a family man. My condolences to all of the family. Kevin Trenberth
