Obituary

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Edna Kathryn (Schroeder) Healy, 95, went home to be with her Lord and Friend on Monday, March 30, 2020. Edna was born April 30, 1924, to August and Elsie (Koepcke) Schroeder on a farm in Verona, Wis. When Edna was six months old the family moved to a farm along University Avenue in Middleton. Edna was the first baby baptized in an English-language service at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Middleton. Before her baptism, all such services were conducted in German. She graduated from Middleton High School in 1941, attended Madison Business College and had her first job at Madison Brass Works. Later Edna worked for 25 years at the Middleton Piggly Wiggly (later Eagle), where she retired as head cashier. In the fall of 1941, Edna met Harry Burdette Healy, who had moved to Madison from River Falls, Wis. with his family. Edna said when she first met Harry she knew he was the one! Harry joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He and Edna were married at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on June 24, 1944, during one of Harry's leaves. They were married for 63 years, until Harry's death in 2008. Harry went overseas in September 1944. As a member of the 84th Infantry Division, Harry saw combat at Geilenkirchen and in the Battle of the Bulge, among other actions. He returned from Europe on January of 1946. On the side of the German boxcar that carried him to the ship, Harry painted in large letters, "All the way to Wisconsin! Edna, here I come!" Edna and Harry were blessed with two children, Annelle Eickhoff (Ben) and Michael (Billie); grandchildren, Amanda Eickhoff Gleissner (Dan), Erica Eickhoff Boehme, John Healy (Kate), Pam Healy (James Triola), Ann Healy McHealy (David) and Sharon Healy Watson (Tyler); and great- grandchildren, Dakota Gleissner, Danny Gleissner, Christopher Watson, Evelyn Watson, Lily Triola and Eleanor Healy. Edna is also survived by niece, Connie (Wirth) Evans; sister-in-law, Betty Schroeder and children, Jim Schroeder, Julie (Schroeder) Endres, Jean (Schroeder) Laufenberg, Donn Schroeder, and Bob Schroeder. Special to her always was Harry's brother, Dave who was always there for her and Harry throughout their lives, along with Dave's wife, Ann Healy and their children, Matthew Healy (Kim), Jonathan Healy (Anita) and Ellen Healy. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; sister, Ardys Wirth; brother, Warren; and brothers-in-law, Fred Wirth (Ardys) and David Healy (Ann); and niece, Ellen Healy. Edna also wanted to remember Bill McChesney and friends, Janell (Stucki) Moody, Leanne Stucki and Lucy Keane, who were just a phone call away whenever she needed them. Edna cherished the many friends she made throughout her life and always enjoyed remembering them with a card, a phone call or her famous cookies. "I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." - Stephen Grellet Memorials in Edna's name may be made to Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM), Special Olympics or the Alzheimer's Association. Very sorry to read about the death of Edna. I was her boss at the Piggly Wiggly store in Middleton years ago. Edna was a very good head cashier and a hard worker and I am sure she will be missed by all who know her. Charles Vieth
