I never knew him well. What I do remember is an austere, chain smoking trucker dressed in a never ending array of flannel shirts who rarely spoke, and even then only seemingly out of necessity. Not only as a friend of his son's, but also as a foster child and and, later, often homeless, I fully expected to be treated with the same contempt to which I had grown accustomed from your average adult...but though he was surely never accused of radiating warmth and love he always, in his few words, somehow made me feel welcome.
