Ellen R. Carlson

MADISON-Ellen R. Carlson crossed over to her loving husband, Daniel on Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer's. Ellen was born on April 15, 1937, the daughter of Erna and Fritz Quiram in Dunzig, a country of its own prior to World War II. During the war Ellen's family fled to northern Germany and considered the town of Klint her home town. As a young woman in Germany, Ellen worked on farms which she talked of often and the wonderful, yet hard life there. She was always very proud of her heritage and family. Ellen was considered an adventurous young women and traveled alone to the United States by herself at the age of 19 to start a new life in 1957. She married Daniel Carlson on Dec. 4, 1969. For most of her life, Ellen was a homemaker. She loved children and provided childcare to the children of the Belmont Road area in Madison. Some of the children of Belmont Road called her “Ellie the cookie lady”. She also had a big love for animals, raising a cockatiel from an egg and her two dogs, Muffy and Buffy. She is now with them in Heaven. Ellen loved to bake, cook and clean and was very proud of the home and gardens she kept. She had a never ending love of dolls and was an expert with her crochet dollies. Ellen will be remembered for her sense of humor and quick wit, as she loved to joke around. Her big heart will be loved and missed forever by her family and friends. Ellen is survived by her sons, Robert (Greg Wahl) Carlson and Richard (Sandy) Cunningham; brother, Werner (Annelie) Quiarm; sister, Rita Schumacher; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; love of her life for 43 years, Daniel; son, Rodger Cunningham; daughter, Brenda Cunningham Peterson; brother, Heinz Quiram. A private service will be held at Highland Memory Gardens.
