LODI-Hazel Mae (Hill) Sandmire of Lodi, WI died on February 21, 2025, at the age of 89 in her home in Edgerton. She was born December 5, 1935, in Chetek to Guy and Beatrice (Barnstable) Hill. Hazel graduated from Chetek High School in 1953. She graduated from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago in 1958 with a degree in Christian Education and completed her bachelor’s degree in elementary education at UW Platteville in 1960. Ken and Hazel met at Platteville and were married July 16, 1960. They moved to Lodi in 1962 where they raised their family and lived for 60 years.
Hazel taught in Lodi schools for 40 years. She was especially active in church, teaching Sunday School, leading youth group, directing VBS, and helping with AWANA.
Hazel loved being a hostess to family, friends and neighbors and opening her home to guests, who were all asked to sign her guestbook. Always insisting that no one could read her handwriting, Hazel typed countless notes to family and friends. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, reading, camping, hiking, skiing, feeding the birds, and traveling. Ken and Hazel’s travels included visits to all 50 states and 4 trips to Europe. After being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, Hazel’s daily walks outside and exercise routines were motivated by her desire to remain healthy enough to be able to care for her family. She was a devoted, faithful and loving caregiver to Ken as he battled leukemia.
She is survived by her children, Jim and Daysi Sandmire of Weston, FL, Sherilyn and Andy Honken of Raymond, MN, and Tina and Rick Helmeid of Edgerton, WI; 3 grandsons; 4 great grandchildren; her sister, Helen Robinson; sister-in-law, Ardis Hill; and brother-in-law, Bradley Sandmire.
She was preceded in death by Ken her husband of 62 years; her parents; nephew, Dale; brother, Harry Hill; and in-laws, Malvin Robinson, Kate and Vern Dysland, Merrill and Val Sandmire, Jake and Lee Sandmire, Bruce and Nettie Sandmire, and Shari Reimer; and great granddaughter, Jillian Honken.
A Memorial Service will be held at LAKE WISCONSIN EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH, N1640 Ryan Rd, Lodi, at 11:00 am on Saturday March 8, 2025, with Rev. Robert Dennison presiding. Burial will be held at Ash Ridge Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 am until 11:00 am.
