Obituary
LODI-Hazel Alice (Riddle) Buchanan, age 100, passed away at Alden Estates in Jefferson on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. She was born on November 2, 1916, the oldest child of Alonzo and Alta (Hook) Riddle. Hazel married Stanley Vere Buchanan on December 31, 1936. She resided in and around Lodi her entire life, living most of it in a home her grandfather had moved to the town and was eventually purchased by her and Stan. Hazel had spent the past year at Alden Estates, due to her loss of sight (macular degeneration) and dementia. Hazel was a good old fashion cook and worked in many local restaurants and at Good Sam. She always had cookies or cake to have with coffee when friends, neighbors or family came to visit. One of her greatest loves was playing her piano. Dad always made sure there was a piano in the house. When she played the old songs, Dad would “try” to sing along with her. Her other love besides Dad, was her sewing. She made a lot of school clothes and quilts for her kids. Later she purchased a loom and began making rag rugs, which she sold or gave to most of the family members. Hazel is survived by her four children, Judy (Harlan) Grubb Sr. of Portage, Ken (Peg) Buchanan of Ft. Atkinson, Sandy (Doug) Clemens Sr. of Dane and Wendy (David) Cook of Waunakee and a daughter-in-law, Diane Buchanan of Beaver Dam. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Julie (Mike) Barton, Jennifer (Paul) Hughes, Harlan Grubb Jr., Janice “Toots” (Robert) Downey, Doug (Shannon) Clemens Jr., Amy (Wade) Keene Sr., Jim (Cindy) Dean, Pete (Norma) Buchanan, Kendra Buchanan, and Christopher, Brandon and Stacy (Cory Meyer) Cook. She is further survived by 17 great grandchildren, Jessica (Chad) Hoff, Mike Barton II, Cody Barton, Alex (Erin Morzek) Dobbins, Jorden Grubb, Christopher Downey, Jasmine Downey, Andrew (Ariel) Dean, Nicholas Dean, Patty (Saige) Nummerdor, Nicholas (Christa) Bozacki, Tyler Bozacki, Levi Bozacki, Michael Buchanan, Sydney Clemens, Liam Clemens and Wade Keene Jr.; Also 9 great-great grandchildren, Madison and Ethan Hoff, Aiden, Abigail, Katlin, Kylie and Owyn Dean and Issac and Ella Bozacki, and 2 sisters, Fern Hughes and Francis Klassy. Hazel enjoyed her 100th birthday on the 30th of October 2016 when a five generation picture was taken. It included Hazel, her daughter, Judy, Judy’s daughter, Julie Barton, Julie’s daughter, Jessica Hoff and her two children, Madison and Ethan. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers and 1 sister; her husband, Stan in 1991 and two sons, William in 1967 and Ronald “Roundy” in 1992. Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON LODI FUNERAL HOME, 157 S. Main St., Lodi, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Per Hazel’s wishes, no flowers, please. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I have known Hazel and family since high school. She always had a smile, and was wonderful to visit with. I think the last I was able to visit Lodi she was making rugs from rags on an old manual weaver. She knew like many of her generation, that everything was a blessing from God. They learned that nothing should go to wast. Two skill that to some of the new generations are totally lost. I Look forward to the day I will see you again, where there is no time and space to hinder a visit. Thank you for being a blessing in my life. Kenneth Rowin
