Obituary

MADISON - Elizabeth “Libby” Monson, age 84, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021, at Agrace HospiceCare after a short battle with cancer. She was born on May 13, 1937, in Rochester, Minn., the oldest daughter of Dr. Lee M. Eaton and Mary Louise (Long) Eaton. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1955, where she was class president her senior year. She married Eugene Monson on June 21, 1957, while both were still students at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. They divorced in 1980 but remained good friends. Libby was a respected member of the Wisconsin real estate community for over 50 years. She served as a Director of the Madison Board of Realtors from 1986-1988, and as Vice President in 1988. She was a member of the Graduate Realtors Institute and served at both the local and state level of the Realtors Political Action Committee (RPAC) Board of Trustees. She joined the Stark Company in 1974 as a sales associate and was later invited to join the management team. Libby also served as a City of Madison alder. She will be remembered for her exceptional leadership, keen sense of humor, and loyalty. Libby was known for her natural ability to connect with people. She was a gracious host and blessed many with her hospitality, knowledge, and resources. She loved to travel, play cards and board games with her grandchildren, and spend time with her family and friends. As a grandmother, she never tired of listening to her grandchildren share about their lives. Libby was their biggest cheerleader and always so proud of each one. Libby is survived by her sons, William (Audrey) Monson, Christopher (Cindy) Monson and Eric Monson; sisters, Lynne Kirklin and Emily (John) Brenengen; brothers, Charles (Chris) Eaton and Thomas (Bogusia) Eaton; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021. To all of Libby’s family. I met my dear friend over 30 years ago. She was one of the wisest women I’ve ever known. Always interested, caring, thoughtful and we’d always laugh a lot when we’d talk and catch up. She will be missed by so many. Smile through your tears because she lived and loved and passed it on to hundreds. Thanks God for allowing me to meet and grow with Libby in good times and bad; she was a true friend.

Condolences from the Kaufmann family who will forever be grateful for the Monson's sale of 32 Acres in Juneau County which became GILEAD, the Kaufmann homestead, from 1971 to 2020. Libby remained a good friend, business associate and sister in the Lord. Her favorite memory of what she called the "small farm" was lying on the grass outside the small house and looking up at the stars.....now she's with them. We love Libby.
