Ann M. Moran

FITCHBURG - Ann Moran died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, due to complications associated with advanced Parkinson’s disease. She courageously battled this devastating disease for the past 25 years, as it progressively robbed her of her ability to care for herself and took away parts of her warm personality and mental acuity. Ann’s life and her disease sometimes brought difficulties and struggles, but she always met these challenges with feistiness and determination.

Ann was born in Pittsburg, Pa., to Carolina and Dominick Macino, the ninth of twelve children. She met her former husband, Paul “Dick” Moran, while he was a student at Notre Dame, married and had four children. Ann supported Dick as he completed his Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral degrees, moving around the country to Ithaca, N.Y., Colorado Springs, Colo., and Champaign, Ill. They eventually settled and raised their family in Madison, Wis., where Ann remained part of the community for the rest of her life, a true Badgers fan indeed. Ann was a mother, homemaker, supporter and volunteer. After raising her children, Ann worked outside the home at Wilson Street East Box office, the Center for Women and Children, and eventually Cuna Mutual Insurance, where she worked until she retired.

Ann cared deeply about vulnerable and marginalized people, and she believed all people matter equally. Ann fought against racism, sexism, and homophobia, and she actively supported those experiencing addiction and domestic violence through her work at the Center for Women and Children. She had an amazing way of listening to people without judgement, making them feel that they truly mattered.

Ann loved summertime, swimming, water aerobics, belly dancing classes and meeting up with her many friends until the progression of her Parkinson’s made these activities impossible. While living at St. Mary’s Care Center during her final years, she enjoyed all the various activities offered by the incredible staff, volunteer performances, visits from family and friends, and holding any animals that came to visit. Ann’s family deeply appreciates the entire staff at St. Mary’s Care Center who, in each of their various positions, perform the difficult but loving job of supporting and caring for those who can no longer care for themselves. We also want to acknowledge with love and appreciation her earlier caregivers who provided on-going friendship after her move to assisted living, her life-long friends, and her extended family members who called, wrote and visited our mom, some traveling great distances to be with her. You all made Ann feel loved and special, and you each brought a unique energy to share with her and brighten her days.

Ann is survived by her children, Richard (Felicia), Kathy (Tom), Aileen (Dan) and Julie (Bob); her grandchildren, Kory (Brianna), Adrienne (Mark), Sammy, Garrett, Jane, Jackson and Johari; great-grandchildren, McKenna and Brayden; and four of her siblings, Clare Stawowczyk, Anita Macklin, Carl Macino and Rose Leeds. Ann was predeceased by her parents; and seven siblings, Larry Macino Sr., Marie Streppa, Evelyn Vannosdel, Violet Hannis, Bob Macino, Carol Hanley and Dom Macino Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s research/Michael J. Fox Foundation or to any Senior Center in your local area. We also believe it would truly honor Ann's memory any time you do something special for someone in need or speak up on behalf of somebody who is unable to do it for him or herself.
