Obituary
CROSS PLAINS - Herbert Niebuhr, age 95, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. He died peacefully at home with family by his side.
Herbert married Lois Obright on Nov. 25, 1949, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Black Earth, Wis. In 1952 they became residents of Cross Plains where they raised six children.
Herb was employed by Cross Plains Electric which became part of Madison Gas and Electric. He was active in his community being a Village Board Trustee and the Village President. He also was happy to serve as President of Council of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church and Superintendent and President of Park School, during which time the “new” Park Grade School was built.
After retiring from MG&E, he enjoyed painting pictures with his beloved wife, Lois, and making frames for all their art. Herb was also an outdoors guy, finding many diverse projects that brought him joy.
Herb is survived by his beloved children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other extended family whom he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, and several brothers in-law and sisters in-law.
There will be a private family burial ceremony at Valley Home Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Maggie Anderson-Peterson of St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. A celebration of life will be held at POST 245 CROSS PLAINS LEGION HALL, 2217 American Legion Drive, Cross Plains, on Father’s Day, June 16, 2024, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
We extend many thank you’s to the wonderful people at UW Health Clinic - Cross Plains, UW Hospital, Meriter Hospital-Madison, and to Agrace HospiceCare, whose excellent care and comfort allowed Herb to stay at home until his departure into eternal rest and peace.
