Obituary

CROSS PLAINS - Raymond P. Maier, age 92, of Cross Plains, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Milestone Senior Living. He was born on November 15, 1932, in Martinsville, the son of Peter and Hildegard (Schachte) Maier.


Raymond was united in marriage to Doris Acker on June 8th, 1954 in Ashton. He was employed at Cross Plains Hardware where he worked as a Maytag repairman for over 40 years.


Ray was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed tending to his garden, cutting wood and hunting and fishing. He also liked to bowl. He especially loved spending time watching his children and grandchildren play sports.


Ray is survived by his wife, Doris, of 71 years; children, Marv (Deb), Dennis (Julie), Luanne (Mike) Gorst, Debbie (Jim) Lucey, Tim, Judy (Paul) Brunner, Dale (Deb) and Mike; 21 grandchildren, Nick, Chris, Shane, Tyler (Lauren), JoJo (Aaron), Stephanie, Amber (Rod), Kelly (Marcus), Kristin (Bruce), Jennifer (Dave), Ciji (Steve), Jamie (Maureen), Aaron (Jordan), Jared (Amber), Brooke (Brian),  Dane (Kari), Dylan, DeeDee (Derik), Nick (Nicole), Whitney (Brian) and Taylor (Mitch), 32 great-grandchildren; brothers, Wendelin and Clarence (Marge); sisters, Hilde Mefford and Louise Kalscheuer; brothers-in-law, LeRoy, Russell, and Tony Acker; sisters-in-law, Sue (Steve) Statz and Marilyn Acker.


He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rose (Jerome) Nonn, brothers-in-law, Frank Mefford and Fritz Kalscheuer; sister-in-law, Loretta Maier; brothers-in-law, Vincent Acker and Laverne "Hunch" Acker; and sisters-in-law, MaryAnn (Jerome) Adler, Marcie Acker and Kristi Acker.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2025. Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Thursday.

Doris and Children, Doris, you and Ray have always been special friends of the Walsh Family. We are all saddened to learn of Ray’s passing. And I am especially sorry that I am out of state and unable to show my respects at Ray’s funeral Mass. I’m in N Carolina visiting my grandchildren. Dan and wife Liz are in Iceland. And Mike and Beth are also out of town ( though I don’t know where) and Mary and Ellis at home in San Francisco.
