Obituary

MIDDLETON-Sailor, calligrapher, talented trial attorney, outstanding Dane County Circuit judge, avid outdoorsman and devoted husband and father, Steven D. Ebert, age 69, left us on Saturday, September 17th as a result of a motorcycle accident. Steve grew up on the east side of Madison where he graduated from East High School. After graduation, he joined the Navy as an electronics technician. He was stationed in Alaska. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he returned to Madison where he attended and graduated from the UW Madison with a degree in Political Science. He went on to get his Juris Doctorate Degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon graduating he got his first job at the Rock County District Attorney's Office as a prosecutor. Later he became the head of the Justice Department's Criminal Litigation and Antitrust and Consumer Protection unit. In 1997 he was appointed as a Judge by then Governor Tommy Thompson. He spent 12 years as a Dane County Circuit Court Judge where he worked as one of two Judges in the drug court, the Criminal Division, and his last two years in the Juvenile Division. He retired in 2009 and worked as a reserve Judge until 2015.   Steve leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 45 years, Barbara Ebert, three children, a son Abraham Ebert (Malinda Galbraith), two daughters, Alexandra Coleman (Nate) and Ashley Lasecki (Louis), three grandchildren, Jordan and Lily Coleman and Claire Lasecki, a brother, Jim Ebert and many other family and friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and June Ebert, a brother, John Ebert, a sister in-law Bev Ebert, his mother and father-in-law John and Rosemary Yurkovich. Steve was always most proud of the fact that he was an "East Side boy".  Honoring his last wishes, a private memorial service will be held along the banks of the Chippewa River to celebrate his life.  Memorials can be made to a charity of your choice.  Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

It was an absolute privelage and honor to work with you, Steve, for your entire time in the Dane County Courts. While I didn't maintain contact with you after you left the bench full time, I thought of you and your wife often and fondly. Rick Baker

My sincere condolences to the entire family. Steve was a very compassionate human being. We talked many time when he was working for the A.G.'s Office and I worked for DOA. Often he would call just to check in and see how things were going. The world will miss such an amazing person. Keep the memories close to your heart and he will be with you always. Sincerely, Mary Riggs

Growing up with Steve in the East Side of Madison, we had a great group of guys who liked to play cards in the basement of Bud Chamberlain's (former Coroner) house and fish in the Starkweather creek. Steve was always fun to be around and seemed to really enjoy life. I was stationed close by Steve in Californio and enjoyed spending some time with him. Barb sold me and my wife our first home in Stoughton. Steve, rest in peace. Your frind: Jim Drifke

Jeff and I will not forget the fun day we spent with Steve and Don Knott on motorcycles, riding to the "Soup Run." It was a chance to spend time with Steve in his favorite element -- on his bike. Steve was one-of-a-kind, and made a wonderful contribution to the Dane County bench. It was my privilege to be his colleague during his twelve years as a judge.
