Obituary

WESTPORT- Artice Dawn Hanson, age 98, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016. She was born Aug. 2,1918, in LaValle, Wis., the daughter of Floyd and Elva Smith. Artice graduated in 1940, from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Madison, where she met her husband-to-be, the late Carl Theodore Hanson of Westport, Wis., one of her patients. They exchanged vows on April 4, 1942, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Madison and were married for 58 years. Artice worked as a nurse first for the Reedsburg Hospital, Reedsburg, Wis., then University Hospital, Madison, and, then for 22 years, as a head nurse and Building Three supervisor at Central Wisconsin Colony. Besides her love of family and friends, she enjoyed gardening, (despite competing with wildlife for the harvests), and fervently supported the Democratic Party. Artice was a compassionate and loving mother to six children, Sherry Jo (George) Lang, Aurora, Ill., Sharon Jo (Gary) Grimes, Birmingham, Ala., Sheryl Jo (Dan) Dauer, Minneapolis, Minn., Sheila Jo (Tom) Wagner, Atlanta, Ga., Shelby Theodore (Pat) Hanson, Sun Prairie, Wis., and Sharla Jo Hanson, Westport. In addition, they cared for five foster children. She is also survived by her six grandchildren: Matthew, David, Jessa, Christian, Jennifer, and Damon; great­grandchildren: Nika, Atlas, Kira, Abigail, Elizabeth and Max; and sisters, Joyce Smith, 96, of Waunakee and Neva Watson, 90, of Woodland Park, Colo. Funeral Services will be held at OUR SAVIOUR'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1201 Droster Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, followed by a luncheon in the church fellowship hall. A private burial service will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Madison. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Heartland Hospice, Madison, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, or Dane County Humane Society of Madison. Dear Cousins, I have fond memories of time spent in Westport with Aunt Artice, Uncle Carl and you. I remember a family filled with love, warmth, wide smiles, and sincerity. With each visit, you had a way of making us feel special and loved. These memories are a blessing to my sisters and me. Thank you Uncle Carl, Aunt Artice ... and cousins! I just heard of your mother's passing and wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with you all. May the time you spend together and the sharing of stories bring you comfort knowing that she is in the hands of our Father. Sherry, Sharon, Sheryl, Sheila, Shelby, and Sharla - How well I remember your mother and father, and all of you, growing up together with you at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Madison. You were blessed to have loving, Christian parents. It is always difficult to lose a parent who loved all of you unconditionally, but may you find comfort in the promise knowing she was "faithful until death" and is already enjoying a happy reunion in Heaven with your father.
