Sylvia Esther Schmidt

ARLINGTON-Sylvia E. Schmidt, age 100, passed away on August 2, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona, less than 2 weeks before her 101st birthday. Sylvia was born August 15, 1915 in Lodi, Wisconsin, the daughter of Albert and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Manthe) Folzman.  A 1934 graduate of Poynette High School, Sylvia married James A. Schmidt of Arlington, Wisconsin, on September 25, 1937.  They enjoyed life together for 53 years until Jim's death on August 29, 1990. Upon graduation from high school, Sylvia was hired as the secretary at the Del Monte Canning Corporation in Arlington.  She worked in that capacity until she and her husband began their family.  Sylvia and Jim lived in Minnesota from 1957 until 1970 where Jim served as superintendent of Del Monte plants in Southern Minnesota.  Upon his retirement, Jim and Sylvia returned to their home in Arlington which they had built the year they were married.  In 2012, Sylvia moved to Phoenix, Arizona.  Sylvia was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church and its Women's Society.  She was a former member of Eastern Star, Columbia County Homemakers, the Poynette-Arlington Women's Club and the Arlington Curling Club.  Sylvia traveled in several European countries, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii.  She also enjoyed curling, bridge, and bowling and was an avid dancer and ice skater. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Nancy Splain of Phoenix, AZ; her son, John W. Schmidt and daughter-in-law Brigitte Schmidt of Cheyenne, WY, and her grandson James Craig Edward Splain of Scottsdale, AZ.  Also surviving are her nephew, Larry Schutz (Vada); her niece, Lorraine Schutz Gapinski (Larry); her grandnephew, Nathan Schutz, all of Portage, WI area; step grandchildren, Charles (Judy) Splain and Eileen Splain Greer (John); a number of cousins and other relatives and friends. Her husband Jim; her parents; her sister, Dorothea Schutz; her brother-in-law, Hubert Schutz, and her son-in-law, Edward Splain preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at the ARLINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 103 Reagles Street, Arlington, Wisconsin. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:00 o'clock funeral service.
