October 25, 1949 - August 31, 2016
Obituary
MIDDLETON-August 31, 2016, the talented, caring and gentle spirit within Russell Norman Howes passed from this world to the next. He was born on October 25, 1949, to Russell and Betty Howes. He attended Eastern Michigan University for a year and then transferred to Michigan State University where he attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1971 and a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Theatre two years later. Russ loved the performing arts and his creativity flourished, working at the Red Barn Theater in Rockton, Illinois, from1972 until 1976.
In an epiphany of a financial nature, Russ pursued a law degree at Wayne State University, earning his JD Degree in 1980. He worked in a private law practice in Manistee, Michigan for two years before he began his career in non-profit development work at Western Michigan University focusing on Planned Giving. As always, Russ brought grace, wit and compassion to his work.
Eventually, Russ was lured to Madison, Wisconsin for a development position at the University of Wisconsin Foundation in June of 1988. Shortly after, he met Sue Vincent and they were married In August of 1990.
Russ was an amazing resource for the Foundation, the University, its friends and supporters, and all of his colleagues. His essential kindness and thoughtfulness were present every day. His counsel and legal expertise were sought out not only within the Foundation and University, but in the community and on the national stage. Russ was able to bring his passions together by writing and performing songs that brought colleagues great amusement and great memories.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert. He is survived on the Howes side by his wife, Sue Howes, his brother, Randy (Colleen) Howes, sister-in-laws Janet Howes and Marilyn Kelley, nephews Dustin, Brandon (Erin), Jason (Shannon), Cory (Anna), grand-niece Madeline and grand-nephew Henry. On the Vincent side, too numerous to mention here. We all will miss him terribly.

Russ was a wonderful colleague, patient mentor, and a delightful person. I learned so much from him, not just about planned giving, but about being gracious, proactive, and self-deprecating. I will miss his chuckle at early morning meetings. - Wendy Coe
