Obituary

MADISON-Alyce R. (Angus) Curran, age 97, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. She was born on Sept. 6, 1918, in Madison, the daughter of Robert and Florence (Engelkee) Angus. Her father died when she was 6 years old and her mother had to raise eight children during the depression. Her upbringing had a major impact on Alyce and consequently, she cherished her family above all things (and remained frugal her entire life!). Alyce was a graduate of Middleton High School. On Nov. 1, 1939, she was united in marriage to the love of her life and childhood sweetheart, Pershing J. Curran in Platteville. She would always say the happiest times of her life were the years spent in Midvale Heights being a homemaker and raising her two daughters. Persh and Alyce were charter members of Midvale Community Lutheran Church. Alyce's second home was the Sequoya Library, instilling in her children a love of reading. She was a passionate bridge player and a fierce shopper for a good bargain. Persh and Alyce traveled frequently; her favorite trip being to Ireland and Scotland which was the land of her father. However, she also loved being with Persh when they visited Panama, where he was stationed in World War II. In later years she was fond of reading her "gossip" magazines and enjoyed listening to country music. Her family has many fond memories of the magical Christmas Eves spent at Alyce's condo and her grandchildren still laugh about the Pfeffernut-baking sessions with her. Although frugal, she was generous when it came to helping with her grandchildren's education, and she was always eager to offer love and support for her family. Alyce is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Alan) Gruendemann of Fitchburg and Kathleen (Lee) Olson of Verona; four grandchildren, Kristin (Todd) Williams, David Jensen, Shannon (Ryan) Anderson, and Luke Olson; six great-grandchildren, Hannah, John, Kate, Denali, Blake, and Rose; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pershing in 1980; and two brothers and five sisters. According to Alyce's wishes, private family services will be held. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Alyce's memory are encouraged to do so to Midvale Community Lutheran Church. The family wishes to thank the staffs at Oakwood West and Agrace HospiceCare, as well as longtime, former physician Robert Cole for their kind and compassionate care.
