Kemp, William E. "Bill"
CROSS PLAINS- William E. "Bill" Kemp, age 92, of Cross Plains, passed away on Saturday June 25, 2016 at Girlies Manor. He was born on January 4, 1924, in Berwick, Pa., the son of Harry and Helen (Watts) Kemp. He married Gertrude "Trudy" Schaffer on July 5, 1947 in Hilbert, Wis. Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He met Trudy at the "Old Red Gym"/ USO Center in Madison. They lived in Madison, Oregon, and Middleton during their lives. Bill and Trudy volunteered for many years for Meals on Wheels and Bill volunteered at Middleton Village and played basketball at the "Y" into his 60s. Bill is survived by his children, Kathy (Tom) Herfel of Mondovi, Wis., Barb Shea of Denver, Colo, Tom (Marie) of Blanchardville, Dan (Leslie) of Cross Plains, Joe (Robin) of Palmer, Alaska; sister, Gloria (George) Lanning; sisters-in-law, Marie Schaffer and Marge Kemp; grandchildren, Tamara (Matt) Houser, David (Katie) Herfel, Rebecca (Kevin) Phillips, Theresa (fiancé Brian Kuhl) Kemp, Matt Shea, Louis (Tyne) Kemp, Jered Kemp, Sam Kemp and Oliver Kemp; great-grandchildren, Haley, Breckin, Teah, Ingrit, Finley, Chloe, Schaffer, and Brianne; and many nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Trudy, in 2006; daughter Mary; brothers, Harry, Bob, Ken, and Charles Kemp; sisters, Ethel Levitski, and Helen Britz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARDS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7450 University Ave. Middleton, at 11 a.m. on Thursday June 30, 2016 with Father Brian Wilk presiding. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Middleton Senior Center or Meals on Wheels. The family wishes to thank Girlie's Manor for their care and kindness shown to ur father over the past few years. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Bill, he was the brother of my step grandfather Chuck (Charles) Kemp. I met Bill a few times in passing over the yrs. He sounded like a very kind and caring person. He seemed to enjoyed doing the meals on wheels. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to all his family and friends.

Bill was a very gentle and loving man who adored his family and friends. I became his pen pal almost 40 years ago writing to each other a few times every year to keep in touch . He was always interested in local sports of his home town in Pa. Bill loved to entertain people with his wonderful singing making many smile and even tear with his wonderful old songs . He made the trip back east to Pa to see his sister Gloria a few years ago and it was such a wonderful visit because I again got to see my good old pen pal once again! I loved that guy , he was always encouraging and up beat. I know he is at peace now with the love of his life Trudy. My heartfelt sympathy to his family , Jill

I have just learned of this and am a ball of tears. Bill was my god father and the best man ever, the person you wanted to model yourself after. He always brought a smile to my face, rest in peace Bill, you were loved by all you touched.
