Obituary

MILWLAUKEE/MADISON – Harold L. "Red/Whitey" Allen, age 89 passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016. He was born on May 3, 1927 in Northfield, IL, the son of the late Leslie and Delphine (Lantz) Allen.  After graduating from Highland Park High School, Red attended college at Bradley University in IL. and Marquette University in WI.  Red proudly served his country during WWII aboard the U.S.S. Miami from which he observed the signing of the peace treaty between the U.S. and Japan.  On Sept. 11, 1948, he was united in marriage with Kathryn Mae Snyder at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Milwaukee.  She preceded him in death in 2006. Red worked with the Prudential and Connecticut Life Insurance Companies, the Milwaukee Public School District and the City of Milwaukee from which he retired. Red was a lifetime member of VFW Post #2304.  Quite an athlete, Red played High School and semi-pro football, boxed in the Navy, and played hockey at Marquette. In addition, he was an avid Packers fan.  Red touched many lives with his outgoing personality and ready smile.  Survivors include his  sons,  Tim (friend Doris), Pat (Kathy Burns) and Dennis;  his daughters, Cathy (Val) Zalaiskalns, Mary (Bernie) Miller and Peggy (Dan) Conklin; 19 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren;  son-in-law, Jeff Crocker and other relatives and many friends.  In addition to his wife Kathryn, he was preceded in death his daughter Colleen Crocker; daughter-in-law, Patti Allen; son-in-law, Jeff Heberer and sisters, Patricia Marasco and Alice Patrick. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 2:00pm at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave, Middleton.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 12:30 pm until the time of service at the funeral home.  Private family burial will be in St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery, Friendship, WI.  Special thanks to the staff at Fountainhead Homes and Heartland Hospice for their care and attention.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, Fountainhead Homes.  Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I remember the look of shock and suprise when I called him Harold, but to me he will always be Uncle Red.
