George Alter

MADISON- George R. Alter, age 83, of Madison, passed away on June 2, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born in Milaca, MN., the son of Reid and Jenny (Hunter) Alter. He married Helen Stieb in 1980 in Madison. George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a steamfitter for Messner Inc. for over 42 years. George was an avid fisherman, both summer and winter. He enjoyed hunting, camping, gardening and snowmobiling along with making maple syrup in the spring. George also enjoyed feeding and watching his backyard birds. He loved visiting with friends and spending time with his family. George was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and a past member of the Short Hair Pointer Club. George is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Shauna Cook; sons, Greg (Pam) Alter, Jeff Alter, Arne (Jessica) Cook and Roderick Cook; four grandchildren, Jessi and Joshua Alter and Tanner and Alec Cook; one brother, Reid (Audrey) Alter; numerous relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2670 Milwaukee St., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. A private burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park.
