John Vaughn

MADISON/SUN PRAIRIE-John Paul "JP" Vaughn, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on April 13, 1929, the son of John W. and Adeline (Hilgers) Vaughn, in Madison. Paul graduated from Madison Central High School in 1947. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1948, and served in the Korean Conflict. He continued his military service as a Major in the Army Reserves. He was united in marriage to Donna Isabelle Binger, on Aug. 30, 1952, at St. James Catholic Church in Madison. Paul received his bachelor's degree from UW-Madison in 1953. He worked as an Environmental Health Supervisor for the City of Madison for 33 years, retiring in 1988. Paul enjoyed scuba diving for many years, and was a star basketball player, playing on the Fort Lawton, Wash., basketball team while in active duty. Paul was on various bowling leagues from 1959-1985, and was inducted into the Madison Bowling Hall of Fame in 1986. He was a gifted and patient instructor and coach for countless Madison area young bowlers, and was instrumental in starting the junior bowling leagues in Madison. He enjoyed travelling with Donna to Hawaii, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Las Vegas. They looked forward to their weekly Friday date nights with good friends. Paul was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church, past member and trustee of the Elks Club and a current member of the VFW Post No. 9362. John Paul is survived by his three sons, Mike (Ed Baskiewicz) of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tim of Chicago, Ill., and Jim (Sandy Meyers) of Sun Prairie; two daughters, Patty (Dan) Grubb, and Jenny (Marty) Mathison, both of Madison; three grandsons, Ryan (friend, Jennifer McDonald), Brady (Brittany) and Tyler (friend, Marissa Ubert) Grubb; four granddaughters, Deidre, Jennah, Sarah (fiancé, John Christensen), and Emma Vaughn; daughter-in-law, Terry Vaughn; sisters-in-law, Madeline Binger and Mary Binger; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, on May 25, 2013; his parents; and his sister, Mary Montgomery. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2016, with Fr. Randy Timmerman presiding. Due to construction on Dempsey and Cottage Grove Road please access Dempsey Rd. from Milwaukee St. Entombment with military honors will be at Roselawn Memorial Park with luncheon to follow at VFW POST NO. 9362, 349 S. Walker Way, Sun Prairie. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Friday, May 6, 2016, and at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Susan G. Komen South Central Wisconsin Affiliate, Leukemia Society of America, or The National Ataxia Foundation.
